A jeep ride into the Kofa's again.....

Our Location:

Road Runner BLM, Quartzsite, Arizona

A beautiful morning, a talk with my sister and around 10 am we headed off in the Little Black Limo for a jeep ride into the Kofa's but this time on King Valley Road. Our goal was the Horse Tank, Grey Tanks, Arch Tank and Bandy Tank.

The ride was good, the road was good for the most part. A bit of a bumpy ride when we turned off of King Valley Road onto #42. A little up and down, over and around, and oh my .... before we reached our destination.

To view Horse Tanks you need to walk a short distance and this is where Riley and Deb D turned around. Tom and I continued on reaching all of the tanks. The hike was a bit on the rugged side but very doable for sure footed folks. Plenty of cement work to make a few of the tanks, a few pipes and a lot of mother natures help.

Back in the jeep we headed off again on King Valley Road but decided we should turn around as we didn't think we could make it all the way through. The only draw back to camping in some of the areas is little to no cell service however closer to the road the service is excellent and there are still lots of nice places to park.

We reached AZ/US 95 and headed into Q. We decided we'd try the other pizza place in town, The Outback. We found it tucked in across from the Pilot truck center. A bit different and we were a little skeptical at first but the pizza proved to be quite good, the atmosphere was wonderful, we could hear ourselves talk. We stopped before reaching the pizza place to gather up Doug and take him along. It was decided we would all go back to this place in the future, we enjoyed it. Back home shortly after 4 pm and we called it a day.

The sun is shining and the wind is slowly picking up, a wind advisory is in effect for tomorrow from 11 - 8 MST. I think we've all agreed we are tired of the wind!  Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed the visit. These are only a few photos of our ride, I will post more in the next few days.

Until next time......

Take care, stay safe,

Deb

  1. Have you explored the Sheep Tanks in Borrego, near the Calcite Mine. Like some of the tanks in your photos it's a very dangerous to hike alone near most any of the sandstone pit tanks
Is Outback better than Silly Al's? We've enjoyed a stop at Al's but have not (did not know of either) Outback
I'd also suggest Celia's Garden while you're in Quartzite.

    1. No I have not explored any tanks in California.
Riley and I think The Outback is better for a couple of reasons. The pizza was better, no burnt spots, the sauce was richer. The place was much quieter and Riley that means a great deal. On the negative side, the menu is very limited, you order in one place and eat in a different place ( order at the back of the store, take it next door to a covered areas with a bar), paper plates and utensils, I think Some days would noisy as they have some music scheduled for three hours on two afternoons a week. The price is comparable.
I’ve read about Celia’s garden, I have no interest in going.

  2. A hundred feet or so before the trail at Horse Tank, if you veered to the left, you'd see an Indian camp in the rocks with some grinding holes in the rocks. It's a real short trail to it.

  4. In the first picture of the horse tank I see the head of a giant dog laying on it's side and no I haven't had any thing to drink today. Silly Al's is on my bucket list but I will try and remember the other pizza place. Vern Still eating Pizza Hut.

    1. Deb and Riley could see many different things in the rock formations, me, not so much. Add it to the bucket list Vern, it would be worth the effort.

  5. Lots of water in those ending pictures. Just can't get enough of those elevated views looking down into the rugged terrain. Glad you all were able to enjoy this beautiful day and thanks for inviting me to lunch. Those chicken wings were delicious.

    1. We were happy you came along, Riley and I thought the food was very good. I enjoyed the hike back to the tanks, lots of scrambling to get to the everything past Horse Tank. The views were wonderful.

  6. What an interesting area where those tanks were! We did not make it to that other pizza place but were wondering if it was any good. Nice to have another place to go that you can actually talk and listen to others.

    1. We all said the same thing. Riley has issues with the noise and the crowds at Silly Al’s and this is a nice alternative.

  7. I've heard the back-and-forth about both pizza places. Apparently there are TWO good pizzas houses in Q.

    1. I am not knocking Silly Al’s, it’s an interesting place and I think everyone should try it. It is a totally different experience from the Outback.
