Lots of photos today...

Our Location: AZ 95 BLM, near Quartzsite, AZ

The mornings are cooler here than in California but still very nice. We both slept well last night and enjoyed the calm, peaceful evening with the door open until just after dark.

The dry spines of a dead saguaro cactus.

I have an idea how they got back there but I haven't checked it out yet.

This is our new site. We are quite literally parked from where I stood to take this photo.

This morning we took a walk to check out an entrance way to a much nicer spot not far from us, and we wanted to check it out for a couple of reasons. I can tell you now that it checked out well, except for cell service which seems spotty in the high winds.

I have photographed numerous saguaros in the past few years but I've never witnessed anything like this.

It is all one. It appears that one of the 'arms' fell down and another set of trunks grew from it.

I think it's the most fascinating growth I've seen.

To keep you from being in suspense any longer, yes we moved. As the crow flies, probably a half mile or close. Driving of course would be longer as we one cannot drive as straight as the crow flies.

The sun is directly behind this middle 'arms' of the above saguaro. I love the spines in the sunlight. They are so easy to see and glistening as they are, makes them look transparent, which they aren't.

This little figure 8 of sunlight shows just how closely these arms are all growing to each other but yet they don't fuse, they remain individual with very little space in between.

Can you see the bird's nest up there between these three arms?

We parked easily and we both think this spot is the one we will use when in this area. It's a prefect spot for us. Of course we noticed that the cell service is a bit up and down and even climbed into the Dogsled to check it out. It's spotty everywhere here, even in our old spot, so I think the high winds may contribute to this. Of course I could be wrong but it's my belief and so we'll see how it works after the winds calm down. As long as we can internet, we will make due. Although the internet comes over the phone and so it doesn't make sense that we get internet but no phone.  I did call my dad and left a message telling him about the spotty service, just in case. My other two daughters never worry about us and so I'm not worried about letting them know but if we remain here for a while I will do so.

This is the top of the above saguaro, as you can see it's hard to believe that these arms come from the same root.

We are now parked back there, although not when this photo was taken.

If it's true that saguaros only grown an inch a year, this one is a couple of years older than I am.

High winds this afternoon have us with the door open but the big slide pulled in. How funny is that? The wind is forecast to lessen steadily as the day goes on and hopefully by bedtime there will be only gentle breezes. Wouldn't that be nice? I have a number of photos of the sunset last night (Sun Jan 26) and I can't decide which are best, so I'll include them. I warn you there are lots of them.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you all had a wonderful day.

From this moment the darkness came quickly, the pinks faded to black and very quickly the night sky was bathed in blackness.

Until next time.... take care, be safe,

Deb

  1. You're bouncing around like I am. Hard to find the perfect site around Quartzsite. Beautiful sunset pictures.

    1. I think we're happy here where we are now. A bit better signal for the phone would be nice but it's not necessary.

  2. Doug is right, it's hard to find the perfect spot, but I think you are getting closer. Isn't it funny how much we depend on the internet now? I've changed spots a few times so the signal would be better.

    1. Perfect is a matter of perception and I think we've found the best spot for us for a few days. WE can get the internet, just not able to call out on the phone. We could have changed spots if we were going to be here alone or for a long time but we're happy with this one.

  3. Beautiful spot you have found there! Love the sunset pictures, very beautiful and it would be hard to pick. Glad you included the ones you did! Nice to have internet that you are able to post the pics!

    1. Thanks Shirley. We think we've found a great spot and will stay here again in the future. I find it difficult sometimes to pick only a few and so I simply don't worry to much about picking just a couple as most folks have no issue with lots of photos.

  4. I've been following a few blogs of RVer's (yes, I'm envious of you all so am living vicariously through your blogs), and it's interesting to me that you prefer to park outside of RV park. I assume there would be more amenities, and perhaps more reliable internet in a park but the downside would be the proximity of neighbours, correct?

My favorite photo of the sunset is the first one. The cactus photos are very interesting too!

    1. I'm glad you are enjoying the time we spend out here in the desert. I too followed a few bloggers that travelled out here, enjoying what they shared in their posts either in the written word and or in the photos they posted. Now I am able to live this dream for myself.

To a point, yes, one of the downsides to an RV park is having neighbours so close by, with little or no kind of privacy. Not all neighbours are bad and I don't mean to imply they are, but for us, and I can speak only for Riley and I, we don't enjoy the RV park lifestyle very much. We prefer the open spaces, the quiet, the unobstructed views, the nature, the freedoms of being able to enjoy our space. We truly enjoy visits from folks, and having our friends park near/with us is always enjoyable and a treat but we also enjoy time just spent enjoying those things I've mentioned above.
We find the parks to be too crowded and too noisy. We wouldn't use the amenities anyway, things like pools, hot tubs, club house, group activities or exercise rooms. With so many folks in a park there is always too much going on to be restful. We much prefer the stillness and peace of being outside the park bounds.

We have 4 solar panels on the roof, 4 batteries in our cubbie and a small generator that meets all of our power needs. WE can easily find a laundromat, dump station, water dispenser and a place to put our trash. We usually have great phone service and internet (our current situation is not usual). So all of our needs and wants are usually covered.

This is just the way we like to do things, and it is only our opinion, it's what works best for us. I'm not saying any other way is wrong because it isn't, but for us, it's not what we want nor enjoy.

The photos are usually things that capture my attention or that I think a few folks back home might enjoy. I'm glad you like them.

  5. I wanted to thank you for your comment on my test blog that I took down immediately on January 19. I'm so sorry to hear that your husband also died of Multiple Myeloma. It's a very rough road. The loneliness is the worst. It's nice that you have your daughter. I have since gotten a post up on my original blog to refer previous followers to my new one after nearly a year of not blogging. I guess I'll see whether I keep it up or they follow. Many thanks for your kind words. www.onmyowndays.blogspot.com

    1. Hello Sherry, welcome to On a long and lonesome highway, I'm very happy that you dropped by and I'm also very glad that you commented. I've been watching for your return for a while and hope that you will continue to move forward finding joy and excitement in your life again. I agree, it is a very rough road, a very lonely road. Sometimes the smallest steps forward are the hardest but once you make them, the ones to follow are easier to make. I'll be stopping by at On My Own to read about your adventures. One day at a time is the only way to go forward, and I know you will eventually find your way. You are a strong woman!
