We visited a ghost town today...

Our Location: Near American Girl Mine Road, BLM, CA

A cloudy morning this morning, we had a splash or two of sunshine but nothing that lasted long. Warm temperatures though, with no wind. After a pancake breakfast we headed out to the old Ghost Town of Tumco. I visited last year but we thought it would be a good walk and we'd see something different.

Sunshine first thing way off in the distance.

So today's photos are mostly of the old town of Tumco just up the road from our current location. A few campers there but the roads are very rough, even going slowly they are grueling to pass over.

That is sand, very hard packed sand.

In the wash, the sand isn't as hard packed in places.

The sand is almost orange in colour.

Our walk there had us doing a little over 2 miles by the time we got back to the Dogsled. Pretty easy walking even though some of it was in the loose sand.

Water eroding the sand here.

It's hard to imagine that is sand, isn't it?

Broken apart.

Returning home we settled in to read and spent the rest of the day inside as the rain started slowly around noon. It never rained hard but a continuous light sprinkle all afternoon and into the evening, not a sopping wet kind of rain but enough to run off the tilt windows that we had open this afternoon. A thick cloud cover meant no sign of the sunset at all.

Riley at a hole in the sand wall.

The sides of the wash that we walked in.

Sand that has blown or washed off the hard packed areas.

A Happy Birthday to Dad's friend Marion. The birthday lady is moving along in her early 90's. We wish her a wonderful day.

The layers can be thin in places.

So fine, isn't it?

Wonder how it holds together.

So there you have it, a pretty quiet day with a nice walk this morning but a very lazy afternoon due to rain. Hope you enjoy the photos.

A mine opening way up there.

Tailings way in the back and more orange sand in the front.

I think water has undermined this section.

The ruins of a building. Do you see the doll?

Until next time.. take care, be safe,

No two alike.

    1. Thanks Dave. I thought it was pretty cool to see. Riley enjoyed it as well, not many placards around to tell you much about what you see.

  2. Yes you are in a pretty rough and tumble area. We hiked all around there years ago. Saw the old graves and remains of the stamping mill. Hiked ourselves up around the those big cyanide tanks as well. Amazing topography there in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains and there's gold in them there hills too.

    1. It must be in the hills because there was none laying around down below!! We hiked around the cyanide tanks as well. We didn't make it into the hills this time but maybe next time. I was surprised how firm the sand was even on the paths. It must truly be a very windy area at the best of times as even the loose sand seemed somewhat packed.

    1. It was interesting and we enjoyed the walk. There is little information that is readable there, I could only find two placards and both are very faded and almost impossible to read. It was fun though and hopefully next time we'll get up into the hills a bit. Some better views.

  4. I'm always fascinated by the geology and how mother nature carves out such beautiful structures.

    1. It is indeed fascinating and ever changing. Although we can see mankind has been there by the many signs of graffiti in the sides of many of the sand structures. They will of course fall off, wear off and disappear but it is a sad thing just the same. It some how distracts from the beauty.

  5. I'll have to check it out. Never been there before. Be glad when I'm able to walk a couple miles again.

    1. It's a bit rough and of course we didn't stay on the trail that lead from the parking area. We joined up with one that came from right, it was through a wash. It's pretty easy walking in most places, a bit rough in others but you're mostly on the flat (unless you go into the hills) with a few up and downs but nothing much. I think you'd enjoy it.

  6. Looks like a fun and interesting place to visit. You mentioned Ghost Town and Tom put it on our list. We are hoping to park in that area for a bit the end of December beginning of January so I now know what is on our agenda...lol
I did enjoy your pictures, nice to see Riley. Same weather here, except the rain did come down really good a couple of times.
    Be safe.

    1. Thanks Maebeme. It was definitely interesting and well worth the time. Glad you found the doll. It was tucked back out of the weather and I think looks to have been there only a short.

  8. Sounds like a great day. That thin sand reminded me of the cave bacon at Kartchner Caverns. Nature is sure interesting.
