Windy day today....

Our Location: Near American Girl Mine Road, BLM, CA

A coldish night, not cold but colder than cool. You know the kind I mean, coldish. The wind was around all night or at least when I fell asleep last night and it was still there this morning. I stayed in bed reading and didn't bother with the sunrise. It would be too cold for me and I was thinking about all of the dust in the air.

Sunset last night.

Last gasp.
Darkness approaches.

Sure enough when I looked out the window we couldn't see the mountains to the west of us. We could see the Imperial Sand Dunes all day but not the mountains behind. The dust in the air obscured them and only on occasions did we see hints of them, outlines in the murk.

This is what it normally looks like. The tan ridge in the front is the Imperial Sand Dunes.

Only the dunes are visible today. A hint of the mountains behind but only a hint. Pretty much like this all day.

The sun was wonderful all day but temps reached 60F/15.5 C with a steady  north wind, with some bigger gusts this afternoon, so not a warm day by desert standards. Toward the hills way off in the distance we could some haze in the air as well. Steady wind would mean dust and I wasn't going to take the camera out for that.

The tan of course is the Imperial Sand Dunes.
A little more definition in this photo.

A day spent putzing and reading while doing some research on a few things as well. A nice day but we closed all the windows and vents for the day as it was chilly with the wind whipping in through them.

Amazing how you can't see anything back behind the dunes, isn't it?

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed your day.

Until next time.. take care, be safe,

Deb

    1. I wish you could see them too George. You must have some great memories of things you've seen out here in the southwest. I'll bet you've eaten a bit of dust on these windy days too. I have no complaints about the weather, I'd rather it be a bit too cool than too hot.

  2. Between being "under the weather' and this wind I stayed in all day. Jerry went to Yuma and the weather was better in town. I love your photo of the dunes. Hopefully tomorrow there will be less wind.

    1. I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well Elva. Hopefully you will be back up to par quickly. We found today it wasn't as windy in town and was warmer as well. The dunes are eye catching in their light tan colour, they seem to go on forever out our living room window. Less wind is always better for me, although a nice light warm breeze is not a bad thing either.

  3. Lots of sand in the air. Cool here but not as much wind. Perfect day for a jeep ride. You had a nice day to enjoy indoors.

    1. We could see it around us, but didn't appear to see any in our area but you know how that is, it always looks to be elsewhere. Cool is better than cold or hot. I'll take it any day of the week.

  4. We well know those coldish big wind days in the Southwest. There are a few things we don't miss about traveling and one of them is those destructive winds. Your in a tough spot there along Ogilby Road with winds blowing the tops of the Imperial Sand Dunes west of you.

    1. I was thinking of you and Kelly during our windy event. I recall your blog posts mentioning the winds, the winds, the winds. Like you, I could do without them. They are so different than the winds of Lake Huron. I can't describe how but they are. We were fortunate that the winds seemed to be blowing the sand away from us and not at us. Even today there was a little blowing sand while we travelled to the rest area along I-8 W.

  5. I am not a fan of wind. It wreaks havoc on the desert, making for less than perfect pictures. Still, the desert is beautiful!

    1. I grew up on an island in Lake Huron and am used to winds but the desert winds are different some how. I can't tell you how but they are, perhaps they are quicker picking up and dropping off, less steady and some how sneakier. I'm not sure. The desert is awesome!!

  6. Love the sunset pictures! Wind, especially a cool wind is enough to keep me inside! Waking up to 15 degrees this am..wish we could head that way!

    1. Okay we aren't nearly that cold, but I wasn't complaining, just stating the fact for future reference. Haha
I'm not a fan of wind, unless it's a cooling breeze on a hot sticky summer afternoon. Then I like a little breeze, otherwise I can do without it.
I too wish you folks were heading this way.

  7. Really like how you caught the ball of sun light just as it went down. "Coldish" a good description a good description of yesterdays weather. Sounds like that wind was every where yesterday at least we did not have to cope with sand coming our way. The wind seems to be gone here, for now, hope it has settled down your way, also. Stay safe.

    1. Some days I can catch the right second and other days, I'm snapping on each side of the right minute. You know how it goes.
The wind here comes and goes and if I say it's gone now, it will start up again in 3 minutes. So I'm not going to tell you it's gone. haha.
