We found warmer temps…….

 

Our Location:

Walmart, Benton, Arkansas

We woke this morning to a cold start but warmer than Wapakoneta. We were literally 5 minutes from the Tennessee state line and only an hour from Nashville. We opted to leave a bit later, around 8:30 am to allow most of the rush hour traffic to at least have a head start.

We arrived this morning and left this afternoon.

Not much colour.

Roughish roads for the most part off and on all day. Of course there were some very nice stretches of fantastic roads as well. Lots of narrow lanes in construction zones but over all a pretty good day. We crossed into Arkansas via I 40 west over the Might Mississippi River after the noon hour. Another 3 hours or so and pulled into Benton Walmart. Not one I would pick again but it will work for the night. We had to get off of I 30 south only to have to get back on I 30 north for about 1 minute. The lot has a bar but the drop down piece has been removed and pretty much everyone fits under it. We had to park all the way across the lot near the forest, unlevel but okay for a night.

We stopped often today, not having our travel legs yet. We rolled along well and hope to put in a shorter day tomorrow. We are hoping to stop near Mineral Wells in Texas, just a bit west of Dallas. There we hope to slip into a park for a few days to take care of a number of things.

We are back on Ontario time....

 

 

Our Location: 

Walmart, Carrolton, Kentucky

 

We left Jacksonville, Tennessee around 7:30 am CDT and a few hours later we crossed into EDT around Upton, Kentucky so we are back in our own time zone. We arrived here around 3 pm EDT. We travelled approx 352 miles/567 km, we used approx 30 gallons of diesel.

We can see spring just starting to show buds on the trees and the grass is beautiful green.

The I-65 Corridor is breaking into light green of spring.

The roads were good and bad, the area between Elizabethtown and La Grange on I-65 N to I 71N was horrendous. It was a rough few hours and we are both tired from all of the thumping and bumping around. Fuel ranged from $3.79 - $4.80 per gallon. The Big Dog's drinking bowl was getting pretty low by the end of the day.

We touched 3 states today.....

  

 Our Location: 

Walmart, Jackson, Tennessee

 

Happy Easter to all. 

We had a good night last night in Greenville, Texas, pretty quiet and this morning we up and out the door shortly after 7. We needed fuel and a quick stop at the bread counter in Walmart. By 8 am CDT we had all the wheels turning and the Big Dog started rambling along I-30 East again. Our original idea was to pull off at either Benton or Forrest City, Arkansas, we waved as we went past both places. Tonight's home dirt is actually tomorrow night's goal. We had a long day but a good one.We arrived here around 4:30 CDT and although there is some confusion, we are parked in front of the Walmart/Sam's Club.  Confusion because another couple and I were told separately to park in front of the Walmart by the GAS ONLY bar, and Riley and I were told to park in the area at Sam's Club with signs that say NO PARKING, TOWED AT OWNERS EXPENSE. Anyway... 

It's very green in the upper eastern reaches of Texas.

Yep, we are headed that way, to Little Rock.

Forgive the dirty windshield. We need to pass through Texarkana before we can get to Little Rock.

We travelled a total of about 488 miles/785 km approx. We travelled about 8 1/2 hours including 4 or 5 stops. We used an entire tank of fuel, but I haven't filled up yet today as there is ONLY GAS here at Walmart. So we used approximately 38 gallons/143 liters of fuel. We ran along at about 65 mph/104 km. The roads were good but slowly started to deteriorate in Arkansas and again into Tennessee. Very groovy, wavy, humpy bumpy with some very bad expansion joints where bridge meets pavement. It wasn't all bad but the bad made the good seem less so. We managed to skirt around an accident at Little Rock, Arkansas and so it didn't slow us down at all.

Since we left Quail Ridge, Huachuca City, Arizona we have travelled through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee. We have travelled 1466 miles/2359 km. We have about 655 miles/1070 km left until we reach the Ontario border. We hope to spend a couple of days in Wapekoneta, Ohio before we cross either Friday or Saturday.

An update  on Rick, my sister's partner. He is currently in ICU, the next 48 hours will determine which direction treatment, if any, will go. Chatted with her and my dad today. Waiting is the hardest thing to do at times like this. She doesn't want us to hurry home and so we won't. I can offer support from the phone, not quiet the same but she has family around her and there really isn't anything more that I can do for her.

We've settled in for a bit...

 

 Our Location: Lake Lurleen State Park, Coker, Alabama

 

The lot at Walmart, Franklin, Tn was quiet, very quiet all night. A few others pulled in, parking in places that weren't designated for parking but oh well. We were up and out the door, on the road before 8 am this morning under cloudy overcast skies. Temps were 63F/ 16C (approx) and a bit of breeze. We managed to turn around and get heading out the right driveway, we turned right on to Malory Lane and another right onto Cool/Cold Springs Blvd, the Interstate was right handy there. As we headed off down the road I noticed all the exits were the same...exit only, which used to mean there was no way back on the interstate from that location. However this one seems to have meant that only the inside lane was an exit lane and no other possibilities. Strange and confusing to me. However maybe some of you already knew that and I'm behind the times but now I know too.

We crossed into Alabama about 9:30 am and the temps just kept climbing. Our high today reached 83F/25 C. Sunny with cloudy intervals and 15 drops of rain as we left Franklin, Tennessee. Roads were good, Alabama allows only 'resting' with no overnights at any rest areas. I filled the Big Dog from just over a quarter full to the very tip of his lip for $138 and change. I was certain it would take a great deal more. Diesel was $4.83 a gallon at the Speedway just near Tuscaloosa.

 Friendly folks and always ready with a smile here in Alabama. We stopped a few times and just kind of ambled along until we arrived around 1 pm. We managed to snag a pull thru site (#5), with water and electric. We are staying put for 4 nights and are going to enjoy the warmth, the sun and the rest. I would suggest if you are going to choose this park you do two things, first check college football schedules and choose an away weekend to come, and second make reservations, either on line or by calling. The park is bit far off the beaten path if you end up not staying. Lake Lurleen State Park, Coker, Al, near Tuscaloosa. I'll post some photos when the connection is better. 

These things are huge.

A call home to my Dad netted me some more local news and a few laughs. We won't be chatting with dad now for a few days as we are settled in. Also called my sister for a quick chat and to see how they are doing. It seems all is well on the big rock in Lake Huron but fall is definitely in the air, cold, damp, damp, damp and cold, did I mention that?

We are getting warmer....

First, hello there, I didn't forget about you but we've been busy. I'm going to put a number of posts together here, but no photos. 

Tuesday, Oct 11. 

Riley and I left our summer spot about 2 pm. We said our goodbyes and closed up everything until spring. The weather was sunny and coolish. Our first stop was just off the Island at Birch Island to fill up with diesel at about $1.70 per litre. Our second stop was in Espanola to grab some lunch to go. (It's approx 1 1/2 hours from our spot to Espanola). From there we motored on heading north for another 40 minutes before finally turning the Big Dog southward and we have been heading in the proper direction since then. We ended our first day (after a late start) around 4:30 - 5:00 pm just about 40 minutes south of Sudbury, Ontario at a truck pull off. We spent a quiet night, but the rain started before the night ended. 

Wednesday, Oct 12

We were up and on the road before 9, heading southward in the rain, wind and cold. The day didn't get any better until much, much later. The rain stopped around Barrie, Ontario and while things weren't sunny, they weren't dripping either. The 401 and Weston Rd was my first ever accident. The merge space was big, no one was there, I started over and looked ahead, looked back and I seen the little black car coming sideways across the lane and couldn't stop the Igloo from coming into the lane behind the Dogsled. It was a kiss but still not fun. The Igloo has a few scratches and we need a new cubbie panel and lock but everything still functions and works just fine. The nice lady cop arrived and we sorted things out. I swear those folks think every opening is their own personal invitation to get into it as fast as they can and say, "I was here first". In all my years of driving I've never had an accident. About an hour later, we were once again on our way heading through Toronto, Mississauga, Burlington and all the other little towns in the GTA before finally hitting the 403 and scooting on out to Brantford. We found the conservation park, got a nice little pull thru spot ( we were so lucky to leave early, the park closes on Oct 15 for the year, as does pretty much every park in southern Ontario). We headed off to Walmart to get a few last minute things we needed and then off to daughter Bradey's home. We visited with Bradey, David and grandson Auston, but new baby Lincoln was asleep already. The night was cold and the morning was wet with more rain. A few minor things around the Igloo and a bank visit before we headed off to visit with Bradey and boys again for the day. We had an enjoyable day with all of them and left shortly after dinner. It was nice to see them even though it wasn't a long visit. We just couldn't connect with daughter Courtney in Toronto but we will in the spring. Friday morning found me heading to Strickland's Chevy dealer in Brantford for a new air filter and a new bulb in the running light. Complicated thing to put in those pesky bulbs, took a couple of hours but by 11 I was on my way. Did I mention that the wind really, really picked up and the skies opened up, pouring down so much rain that it was unbelievable. It passed in 20 minutes, all while I was sitting at the dealership reading my book. Back to the Igloo at the Conservation area by 11:30, Riley and I hooked up and headed out even though it was a still a bit windy but nothing overly bad like it had been. A drink of fuel in Brantford had us paying $2.19 a litre but the onRoute at Dutton had us drinking at $2.29. I like to keep us on the upper side of half when we travel.  The border crossing was interesting, it was fast for what it was, very few cars at all in the lines but I was waved over to the truck lane. No idea why but it was interesting, never been in the truck lanes at Detroit before. Two nice lady border agents checked out the Igloo and seemed to be all smiles as to the fact that we could get away from the weather, wished us well and sent us on our merry way. We didn't have to pay a toll. How weird. We managed to make our way to Walmart, Wapakoneta, Ohio arriving about 5 pm. Sunny skies, warmer temps of about 55F/12C but still a wee bit cool as the sun went down, I was glad to have my sweater. Parked by the lawn and garden/automotive side, very quiet, excellent place to park.

Saturday, Oct 15

After a quiet night, which I didn't sleep much we woke up and made tentative plans for the day. Cold this morning, around 43F/6.1C but at least there was no frost. We headed out around 9 am after stopping for fuel at the Murphy's, diesel was $5.49 per US gallon. Pointing the Big Dog's nose southward we just let him run and run he did. We stopped a few times but not until we reached Kentucky, we stopped at two different rest areas that we would certainly consider to be prime spots to overnight in the future. The first is just north of the I-71 cut off, lots of space there, very clean and welcoming. The second was along 1-71 around Bowling Green, KY, also nice and welcoming, good for overnight, very big lots. We crossed into central time right around that same area, it went from 1:30 to 12:30 and we were still letting the big boy go. We debated about Franklin, Ky, White House, Tn or Franklin, Tn for the night. Each Walmart offers overnight parking. We were happy to be through Nashville today and so we pushed on arriving here around 4:30 pm. We've never stayed here before and I wouldn't recommend it for these reasons: it's an exit only, we will need to find a way to get back to the interstate in the morning:, the lot is big but chopped up and not very well suited for anything our size or bigger. Smaller vans, even maybe small motorhomes but we had to angle the truck to get the back end of the trailer in out of the lane.  It's a very busy store. Very warm as the day progressed, our high temp reached 78F/25.5C. No wind and sunny skies. We are happy campers. Tomorrow we plan on arriving at a destination of our choosing to rest up for a number of days.

Some notes for those coming behind us via I-75, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. First the I-75 in Michigan is greatly improved, or at least southbound it is but there is still an ugly stretch near Monroe, not as bad as before but still plenty ugly. Our first sighting of fuel in Michigan (diesel of course) was $5.99. Ohio roads are fair with some rough areas, lots of scored pavement with the top smooth layers gone and just the grooves remaining. Not as good as in years past. Cincinnati is still under lots of construction of course but it's getting better too. Fuel in Ohio (diesel only) ranged from $5.98 to about 5.39. You need to really watch. Kentucky, was well, Kentucky, roads were decent overall with some long rough areas and fuel was running a little less than Ohio with around $5.60 to $5.35. Tennessee roads have quite a few rough patches but Nashville was a breeze with little construction. Fuel was in the low $5's, less than $5.50 but we did sight off in the distance a $4.98 (credit), $4.68 cash (or something like that, with a big difference). Overall there is lots of construction in all states but it being Saturday, we didn't have any troubles. Of course the lanes are narrow, uneven and always squeezing by the big cement barriers with only a hair to spare. The leaves are barely turning yet, a few hints of colour here and there but nothing to speak of once you get past mid Ohio. 

As always when we travel I've been calling my dad to let him know we've arrived safely and where we are. Always nice to chat with him. Today was the gender reveal for nephew Jesse and wife Claudia, a baby girl is expected in March. Congratulations to all. Condolences to the Bowerman family in the passing of Andy on the evening of Tuesday Oct 11. 

So now I think you are up to date and I'll be blogging on a more regular basis now. No photos today as I can't get the computer to recognize the sim card from the camera. I'll work on that another day.

Problem fixed, further south, snow, rain and over cast day....

An early morning this morning. We were both up before 7 am, packed and heading out of Big Buck Resort before 8 am. The weather was cool, right around the freezing mark but the skies were overcast and threatening. We hung a left at the end of Sparks Road heading toward Selmer, TN. We passed through Selmer and on into the fine state of Mississippi where we zipped right past Corinth and on down the road to the town of Biggersville, MS. Officially the repair shop is located in Rienzi, MS but our gps couldn't find it. We arrived at Butch's Repair Shop before 9 am, parked and headed inside to find out where they wanted us. Brandon, Butch's son was there and was very helpful, he even just backed us right up to the doors, let us plug in our heater and they went to work. About an hour and 15 minutes later we were on the road again, on our way south. Josh and Brandon worked quickly and efficiently to find the problem. A possible solution I had mentioned to David next door at Big Buck but he assured me it couldn't be. A blown fuse in the truck panel. David wasn't testing the proper wire in the plug in the truck. So alas, we didn't check the fuses in the truck. Our entire light issue is now solved, along with a new break away cable as well. We discussed the plug in the truck which has a small piece out of the side casing and since it's a factory install I'll simply use the one in the bumper until we get home and brother Rick or my dad will change it for me.  Brandon and Josh were extremely nice young men, very courteous and knowledgeable. The bill was a reasonable $150, which included yesterday's service call to the rig. No complaints here. From there we headed south on US 45 all the way to US 82 West. We travelled about 335 miles/533 km today. We passed over the mighty Mississippi River into Arkansas and continued along under cloudy overcast skies. We had rain, sleet, and snow today on our journey. One can see the snow in the trees and along the country side in fields. Not much but enough to say, yes it snowed. We arrived in Crossett, AK and have pulled in at the local Walmart for the night. Big lot, lots of trucks but we're parked close enough to the store to be using their fast wifi and still in the designated truck parking area. Not a bad deal. The temperature today reached a high of 35F/1.6 C and tonight is predicted to go to 24F/-4.4C. Hopefully it doesn't get that low but we've decided to heat the inside as hot as we can get it before bed, shut off the heater and I'm usually awake through the night and I'll turn it on for an hour or so and that should hold us through until the morning. Tomorrow the temperatures will be warming up significantly from the last few days and under sunny skies we're looking forward to a nice day. Our goal tomorrow is into Texas and then Friday we'll reach the small town of Crosbyton, also in Texas, where we stayed last year. We'll stay for a few days to rest and enjoy the warmth before heading on.

Called dad upon our arrival and gave him an update. He reported they have 5 inches/12.7 cm of snow (approx), very cold temperatures and a warming trend coming that will produce more snow in the days ahead. Lucky he has lots of wood for the winter ahead.

Cold, some lights, moving to repair shop tomorrow....

Our Location: Big Buck Resort

A very cold and blustery day. Wet, damp and windy would describe today. We stayed around the 45F/7.2C mark for the high but with the wind it felt much colder. Tonight the temps are supposed to drop well below the freezing mark.

 

Riley and I walked only once around the park and stopped at the office to chat with Tina (park owner) and pay for the last two days. Tina is a truly wonderful person. The park is a fantastic place and we enjoy it greatly. It's a Passport America park and so we pay only $17.50 US per day. We are a short drive from Memphis, and Jackson, TN as well as Corinth, MS. The small towns of Bolivar and Selmer have a great deal of charm and offer some interesting sights. I think it will be a regular stop for us on our travels through this area. 

 

I chatted with my buddy Ron this morning, catching up on all the gossip and just touching base. Riley and I had hoped to meet up with him and his lovely wife Sharon some time over the winter but that won't be happening. Ron has a few issues that he's taking care of and that will perhaps keep them at home until into the new year. Hopefully they can pull Newwwmar out of his shed and get a few weeks in the sun in Mississippi . Good luck buddy. 

 

Butch from Butch's RV Repair stopped by around 2 pm and managed to get the lights all working again EXCEPT the tail lights of course. Tomorrow morning Riley and I will pack up and head south to Rienzi, MS just outside of Corinth to his shop. If necessary we can spend the night with hook ups there but I'm hoping to be on the road tomorrow night. We shall see how things go and I'll try to keep you updated. I chatted with Dad again tonight just to keep him in the loop and to hopefully ease his mind and make him worry less.

 

The rest of the day we spent indoors as it's just too cold outside for me. This damp cold makes too many things hurt and I'm ready to get out of here. A few days drive to the west is warmth and heat, and it looks like no rain so we're excited to be heading that way. 

 

A sad note tonight, during my chat with Ron this morning I learned that our friend Chuck passed away a few weeks ago. Our hearts go out to his wife Jeanne and son Josh of West Virginia. Chuck was a very quiet man, shy and soft spoken. Jeanne is a fire cracker and full of life. They made a wonderful couple.

Delayed by a couple of days....

Our Location: Big Buck Resort

I woke this morning to rain and warmer than expected temperatures. Riley and I had debated about the drive in the rain but decided we'd head out anyway. We hooked up and began checking lights. Only one turn signal worked, no other rear lights at all. Needless to say we unhooked and are staying put until we get this issue fixed. 

 

I tried to call a fellow near Corinth, MS but his phone doesn't accept international calls, so I sent him a text but didn't hear anything back. I headed off into Bolivar to a local auto repair shop to ask their advice. They sent me to Selmer, TN to an RV repair guy, but he was closed. I was a few miles from Corinth and so continued my drive. Butch's RV Repair is just outside the little town of Bigger, MS. Butch himself chatted with me and has assured me he can fix the issue. He's coming to the area tomorrow and will stop in and check a few things out. If necessary we can haul the Igloo to his shop, less than an hour away where he will get us set up with hook ups as needed and do the repair if he can't fix it tomorrow. 

 

I arrived back home as the rain was ending, around noon time. Riley and I discussed that this was a better idea to stay here two more nights as Tuesday night every where I look is going to be well below freezing and that would be an issue if we were dry camping somewhere. So we're happy to stay a few extra days. 

 

The rest of the day past quietly. I called my dad around 8 pm ONT time. We chatted for a bit, had a few laughs and just kind of touched base. Always enjoy talking to Dad and I think it makes him feel better to know that we're staying put until things are all fixed. 

 

Sorry no pictures today, the rain was ugly and I only had my phone. My quick jaunt into Mississippi was fun but not a sight seeing excursion as I was on a mission. It was a solo trip as Miss Riley opted to pass on the ride. She also takes the pictures when I drive. I don't try to snap and drive, I'm not nearly that talented.

Our last post from Big Buck this fall.....

Our Location: Big Buck Resort

A nice day, no rain but a few snow flurries before lunch time, but just enough to make us say, 'Is that SNOW?' No wind today which made it much warmer outside. I believe we reached a high today of 47F/8.3C with mostly over cast skies and a lot of frozen water hoses this morning. Not ours, I disconnected it last night before dark.

This afternoon Riley and I busied ourselves doing a few chores and an errand. We headed off to get fuel, drinking water and exchange a propane cylinder. Those things accomplished we came to home to have some lunch before dumping all tanks and disconnecting the water hose, putting away all hoses, black and drinking. Tomorrow we have a few more little things to tend to before we head off.

We've changed our original plan and will be heading to Benton, AR tomorrow instead of Corinth, MS. We've decided to follow the same route as this past spring when we came home. We will head through Memphis and Little Rock and then hang a left onto I-30 toward Dallas-Fort Worth. We think the further south we head now the sooner we'll find warmer weather. The last few cold days have convinced us it's what we both want to do. A call to my dad tonight had me easily convinced we're doing the right thing, they had a blizzard yesterday and more snow today. Too early for the white stuff in my opinion. Brrrrrr....

We are planning on going back to the little park in Crosbyton, TX and perhaps staying a few days at the BLM land near Carlsbad, NM before heading toward El Paso. Those are the plans at this moment but who knows what might happen. We shall just point the nose of the Dogsled and head off.

We tidied up and did a few house keeping things, including making a pot of hamburger soup (ground turkey for us instead of beef) for the next few days. It's always easier to heat something up than it is to figure out what to cook on travel days.

A couple of birthday wishes to my uncles Lyle and Don. Lyle's birthday was yesterday and Don's today. Happy birthday gents. I hope the day has been filled with all good things.
