Future plans...

It seems the rain has finally stopped and things are starting to dry out once again. Some very sunshine filled days of late with a cool breeze that reminds us that spring while approaching still hasn't really arrived. 

 

This caught my eye, it is parked among a variety of trailers. Very cute, I think my buddy Ron would like this!!

 

 

Very few photos as I've photographed many things in this park before and to post the same photos would be tiring I'm sure. All of today's photos were taken in the park with my phone.

With all the dire warnings in the media I thought I would just give you all an update on our plans. Our plans are to return home as scheduled around mid April. Except for a few minor differences such as more hand washing, more diligent cleaning of surfaces, we really aren't doing much different. We aren't big on mixing in crowds, we don't go out much to eat, we don't order take out very often and so we've now determined we won't be eating out or taking out at all. Our biggest risk is when we do the necessities, such as fuel, groceries, and propane. We are more diligent about doors, surfaces and such that others may have touched/handled. Washing, sanitizing and just good common sense go a long way to avoiding even a common cold. However we would encounter the same risks no matter where we are located. So we really don't see any benefit to hurrying home to Ontario. We will be meeting our friends Ron & Sharon again this year but truly don't feel we would be at any greater risk than we are currently.

For those that have met Riley, you all know she's pretty tall, she's around the 5'11" mark, that gives you some idea of how tall the agave plant is beside her. This is NOT the biggest one in the park.

This is just our own view, everyone is entitled to an opinion. We must each do what we feel is right for ourselves. Whatever you decided to do, I wish you good health, good luck and safe travels. Wash, disinfect, and cover up when you cough or sneeze, use good common sense and stop buying all the toilet paper. An interesting thing I noticed at Walmart, less toilet paper on the shelves than facial tissue/kleenex. Now that is surprising to me.

Change of plans....

Our Location:  Eureka, Missouri
(Tuesday & Wednesday, April 2 & 3)

Our last day in Natural Falls State Park near Colcord, OK was not our last day. We stayed an extra day spending some more time with our friends Ron & Sharon. I have no idea when we will see them again but we truly enjoyed our visit with these wonderful folks. We didn’t do a lot of things but the visiting was worth more than I can tell.

We spent around the campfires, chatting about a vast number of topics, reminiscing about many things and people we know, laughing and just enjoying the time. The weather was coolish but warming up and we took advantage by sitting outside most of the time. It’s amazing how easily you can pick up with friends you haven’t seen for a long time and it seems as if no time has passed. We are looking forward  to seeing them again in the months and years ahead.

We pulled out of Natural Falls State Park on Wednesday morning before 9, saying our goodbyes, see you later, and left the park after a short visit to the dump station as well. We followed AK 59 North until we made a slight turn on to I-49 North. From there we skimmed the edge of Joplin, Mo and joined on to I-44 East. We would travel along this interstate for a couple of days. We had plans to stay in Rolla, MO as I had checked and the Walmart allows overnight parking. However upon reaching this store and asking inside we were informed that they hadn’t given us all the particulars. You can only stay if you aren’t longer than two parking spaces. You cannot park in length covering a number of spots, you cannot impede traffic in any way and you cannot put the feet down ( you could then drop the trailer in the combined spots and park the truck beside). Hm…. this was not what we wanted to hear but so be it. We climbed back into the Dogsled and started onwards.

It was much later in the day than we normally stop but we pulled into the Eureka, Missouri Walmart and of course we had called ahead and made certain we could park there. The lot is very uneven but we managed for the night and had a good nights rest. We were just 30 miles west of St. Louis. 

Some didn't hang over the road but others completely covered it with the overhang.

The day while uneventful was longer than we like and the road was not one I want to travel again. In places the travel is good, and in other places, not so good. AK 59 was windy, steep and the lanes were very skinny. Driving under the cliff side wasn’t enjoyable for me but it was only in a few places and we weren’t directly under the biggest overhang. The country side is much like driving in Ontario except for the rolling hills.

Quiet few days....

Our Location: Natural Falls State Park, Colcord, OK

 

A dreary day, a nice day and cool nights have been the weather here the last few days. Below the freezing mark over night means we disconnect the water hoses at night but it's warmed up nicely through the day except of course for the wind. 

 

It's been a very quiet few days and I'm sorry but I have no photos for you, I've been lazy and not really doing much of anything except visiting. 

 

Met some friends of Ron's & Sharon's, fellow Canadians in fact, and from Ontario too. Small world isn't it? Meeting Ontarians through some Americans. I think that is kind of funny myself. 

 

Ron, Sharon, Mark, Judy, Riley and I went out to dinner last night at a local steakhouse. I think a good time was had by all, or at least I had a good time so I assume everyone else did as well. Lots of smiles and laughs, swapping stories, and so on. How can one not enjoy that? 

 

A campfire after we returned home (except Riley), had us still chatting with no lag in the conversation. However the cold damp chill had us all heading to our homes around 9 pm. Brrrrr would have been the word of description to use for the feel of the air. 

 

Today is our last day here at the park and with our friends Ron & Sharon. We have enjoyed our time with them and hope our paths cross again many times in the months and years ahead. They are truly wonderful folks with big hearts and a ready smile. It's been a fantastic week for Riley & I. 

 

Perhaps our paths will cross again with Mark & Judy, also a nice couple whom we enjoyed meeting. Friendly, thoughtful and easy going folks that Ron & Sharon  met at Magic River in Long Beach, MS. It seems it is the year to catch up with the MR (Magic River) bunch. If you recall we met up with our friends Lisa & Paul (Buzz), along with other Magic River folks Jerry & Carol earlier this year at the tent event in Q. We haven't seen any of them for a couple of years and now we have met up again with many in just this one short season.

 

We are running short on our data this month for some reason so I'll not be posting much for a couple of days. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed your visit.

Storm warnings, another view of the falls.....

Our Location:  Natural Falls State Park, Colcord, OK

A nice morning that Riley and I took advantage of to get a little walk in before the predicted rain. It did rain eventually but we were inside by then. Only a couple of miles on an extended walk of the Pine Ridge Trail. This is a trail meant for wheel chairs, older folks with bad balance and young people with strollers and little kids on bicycles. It’s less than a mile long and is all hard top. No big hills, some gentle slopes and easy walking. 

The Pine Ridge Trail goes along here. This is also the bathhouse/storm shelter.

 

Riley stopped after a round but I kept going and entered the Bear Paw Trail, doing only a small portion. It’s a rough, humpy, bumpy trail, similar to Fox Den meaning the footing isn’t the greatest and if not careful one could slip. The path is not smooth and in some places is steep. I took a left turn instead of continuing along the trail to the bottom of the ravine and instead came out at the falls once again. I think if Riley is going to do this trail we will start there instead of at the sign indicating the trail beginning.
 

For any Lord of the Ring fans, I believe this would make a great party tree.

 

A dreary day but a good visit with friends in the late afternoon around a campfire. The Camp Host came by to tell us all of the impending possible bad weather. Hail, high winds, rain, and severe thunderstorms. It would of course happen over night. Riley and I packed a bag just in case we had to go to the storm shelter/bath house. We didn’t use it. The storm ended up being only rain or at least we didn’t hear anything other than rain. I see no downed branches or damage of any kind when I look out the windows. We heard no wind, thunder or hail. The rain came in waves but the storm must have gone around us or at least we didn’t hear it. I heard rain around 3 am and again around 5 am. The temperatures are cooler though. The sky is overcast so we may get more rain today.

 A call from SIL(sister in law) Janet at bed time had me hearing the news of Dennis’ emergency knee surgery. He developed an infection in his replacement knee. The knee is 10 years old and the infection came on pretty suddenly. They operated, cleaning all of the ‘gunk’ out of the knee, replaced all of the plastic parts and he’s up and about once  again. He’ll be on antibiotics for a long time, 6 weeks of infusion antibiotics every day, and then at least a year of oral. Ironically the infusion drugs are finished the day before they catch a plane to fly home to Buttercup Ridge in Roseneath, Ontario. He’s a tough guy though and he’ll be back playing golf before long.

A quiet day, solo hike...

Our Location:  Natural Falls State Park, Colcord, OK

A nice day, started off warm but cooled off due to winds. A walk solo along the Fox Den Trail netted me today’s photos. It’s marked as difficult in the guide and I would say it is definitely difficult. It is very steep in most places, and not well signed but very doable if you take your time and rest if need be. There are no major obstacles only the steepness of the trail. 

A lovely park, this is the tent camping area.

 

We spent the day doing our own thing until later in the evening when Riley & I popped over to spend some time with our friends. The lovely Miss Sharon bought us a Cacti Wind Chime. How very sweet of her. Thank you Miss Sharon. We were a bit later than normal getting home and so this blog post wasn’t posted yesterday. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Meeting more old friends again....

Our Location:  Natural Falls State Park, Colcord, OK

We slept well and woke to coolish temperatures but the sun warmed everything up. Coffee and breakfast to start the day followed by a quick visit with Ron & Sharon to set our plans for the day.

Riley and I went for a walk to see the falls and then followed the signs for the Ghost Coon Trail. It was a couple of miles around the trail, a bit up and down but scenic. It followed along the bluff for a while and we could look down into the ravine for about half the trail.

 Back home we rested for a bit before Ron came by to tell us that friends Billy & Sharlene were near by. We had made plans yesterday to meet today for lunch. Ron & Sharon, Riley and I climbed into Ron’ s truck heading into Siloam Springs to meet our other friends.

We meet up with Billy & Sharlene at the Rib Cage. We haven’t seen them for a couple of years as well. Sharlene has been going through a very rough time as she’s finally finished her chemo for breast cancer, and will be taking radiation soon. She has suffered a stroke as well in the last number of months. Billy has had the same knee replaced about 4 times but is doing a bit better now. Although both are walking with canes, they seem able to get around pretty well.

After lunch we came back to the park and sat around for a couple of hours chatting and catching up, telling some stories and just doing what friends do. It was such a wonderful visit and we were both very happy to see Billy & Sharlene.

 Riley and I spent another half hour or so with Ron & Sharon after Billy & Sharlene left  before coming home for the rest of the day. The sunlight and fresh air seemed to play a trick on us and we’ve  been finding ourselves very tired today. So a quiet night for us at home.

We've met up with our friends....

Our Location:  Natural Falls State Park, Colcord, OK

A nice quiet night at Wagoner Walmart and we both slept well. It was a bit on the coolish side this morning but nothing too bad. No frost just some damp windows. The sun peeked over the building in the east and stayed with us for the whole day.

I unhooked the Dogsled, moved a few hundred feet to fill up with diesel and back to hook up to the Igloo within 10 minutes. A quick saunter into Walmart to get a couple of things we’d forgotten and before long we were on the road again.

 Pulling out of Walmart we headed north on US 69 again for a few miles, before we turned right onto OK 412 E, scenic highway. It divides a bit further into the ‘Turkey Turnpike’ (a local woman called it that) and we stayed to the left taking the scenic route.

We passed through the little towns of Locust Grove, Kansas and a couple of others that escape my mind right  now. A very nice hilly, windy country road with some interesting sights to see. We travelled it for less than 30 minutes until we found signs directing us to Natural Falls State Park. It’s a beautiful, inviting park on the right side of the road and we pulled in a bit early.

The lady in the office was super nice and told us it was no problem, no one was in our site anyway. So by 11 am Riley and I were parked in site #26, a very nice pull through with cement pad, water and electric hook ups, a nice cement picnic table and a bbq grill, as well as a fire pit. The empty #27 beside us was waiting for our friends Ron & Sharon.

We both had showers and I started preparing some lunch (early for us but we were ready anyway) after I chatted with my dad to let him know we had arrived safely. By the time we had finished our sausage quesadilla we could see Newmar coming our way and sure enough Ron & Sharon along with their cat Magic were pulling in beside us. 

 

Can you say spring? Daffs are out here.

 

A quick chat with hugs all around and then we moved back home to let them set up and settle in. Sharon came over to sit and chat with us while Ron did his stuff and then he came over as well. We sat around chattering and catching up for a couple of hours and before we knew it the afternoon was gone. They headed home for dinner while Riley and I sat outside for a bit doing our own thing.

A nice evening in store as we’ll go over for a visit and then tomorrow Ron & I will go find some firewood for a camp fire. We all enjoy those from our time at Magic River in Long Beach, MS.

So today’s drive was less than 2 hours, roads were okay but not great. However it seems Oklahoma roads are all the same. I've heard the toll roads are worse but since we didn't take them, I can't say for sure.

Still windy here.....

Our Location: South Entrance BLM, Joshua Tree National Park

 

Yesterday was once again a day to have the big slide pulled in. The wind gusts were sneaky. No wind for an hour or so and then bam big gusts, on and on and on. Stop again for a while, start again really quick. The Igloo rocking and rolling I'm sure has scrambled the eggs, so no sunny side up ones until we get to the store. 

Another inside day again yesterday, but on tonight's post I've some photos to share. I think we will be heading into Indio for a bit today to get out and about and do a few errands. Janet's friend goes home today so perhaps we'll see Janet Thursday or Friday. After that we're hoping to move on from this windy knoll.

I spoke with my buddy Ron for an hour or so yesterday, just getting caught up on the news. Him and his lovely wife Sharon were heading out in the cold Kansas weather on their annual Good Luck motorcycle ride. They take one every New Year's Day for as long as they've been married and I think he said maybe 3 or 4 before the wedding bells too. Ron told me the wind was cold, the sun was shining and they had snow. I believe he may have said 17F/ -8.3C was the temperature. I could be mistaken of course but I'm pretty sure that was the number he said. They bundle up well and have switched from a two wheeled Honda to a Trike. Be a bit more stable I think.

A maybe connection...

Our Location: Buttercup Ridge, Roseneath, Ontario

I think I'm going to crawl in a hole and wait for Murphy to go away or at least mail him elsewhere. I'm tired of Mr. Murphy and his wily, sneaking ways. 

  

Thanks to Patsy for giving everyone an update. I am currently using my JET PACK but it has a faulty on/off button. So it works on occasion and not on other occasions. A new one is in the mail in the US to a friend who will then forward it on to me, since Verizon doesn't ship to Canada. Thanks Ron & Sharon. So for now I will try to use this on again, off again connection. So if it's off again, no concerns. 

 

Let me catch you up on our doings. We enjoyed our visit with Courtney & Matt, the weekend went by pretty fast.

 

Since then we visited the little city of Peterborough where we visited Kal Tire to do two things. First was to return the chocks Jake had forgotten, and second was to make an appointment to replace the two tires in question. I'll have them look at the third tire at the same time.Since we are heading through Peterborough on our way north we will stop at Kal Tire for the new tires. It's about 60 km/35 miles to their location so it only make sense to do it on our way through their little city. Our tentative appointment is May 3.

 

We also managed to do a major grocery shop while there and now we're pretty much set for the rest of our time here. We had a day and a half of rain which cooled us off a fair amount but the snow is now all gone, not even a hint anywhere that we can see. We can't however see into the forest very far, so there may still be snow there. The open grounds are muddy and soft but hopefully it'll clear up soon and dry out. Although I think it will take some time to dry out the corn fields here as they are extremely soft even to the step. 

 

I have managed to complete our laundry in the days this week as well as any from the house that needed to be washed also. I'm going to give the house a bit of a shine before we leave as well. Even though the cleaning lady will be coming before Janet and Dennis arrive home I don't want to leave any messes behind for anyone else to clean. 

 

I spoke with Janet a day or so ago as she called to chat for a bit. If any of you out there own a Mandeloin slicer please either get the mesh glove or get rid of the slicer. Janet is now hoping the glued on finger tips of two fingers will heal and not be lost. Not to mention the deep cut on a third finger. It is her right hand, which is her dominant hand of course. Daughter Courtney has had a few nicks and cuts from her own slicer which she still won't part with. Both Riley and I had cuts from ours before I threw it in the garbage when we lived in our Stix 'n Brix. Riley's was a minor cut while the stupid thing was in the cupboard and she moved it. Mine was a cut to the bone while washing the thing. Makes me shudder just to remember. 

 

The sun is out today and hopefully the temperatures warm up enough to dry out some of the mud and grass. It's too muddy even to walk on the drive way as it's pretty soft and it tries to suck the shoes off of a person. 

 

A quick note from my Buddy Ian way out in Nelson, BC had us chatting for a bit today. It was nice to hear from him again, it's been a while. Ian and I met while he lived in St. Thomas, Ont, a few years ago. He's an English fellow who has always managed to make me smile. He's also a helicopter pilot. Nice chap as they say!! Good luck Ian. 

 

The past few days we've managed to watch a bit of Hawaii 5-0, and read a few books, do some house keeping and even managed to cook a bit. We've been keeping out of trouble. 

 

So there you have it, we are all caught up now. Nothing exciting, just more of the same stuff. Hopefully we'll have some nice weather now and we can do a bit of yard work to keep us busy and perhaps even manage a hike if the trails dry up in time.

 Belated Happy Birthday to my nephew Allan, who's birthday was April 21. 

Happy Birthday to another nephew Jesse who's birthday is tomorrow, April 28. Jesse shares the same birth date as his great grandmother Katie (his father's grandmother). Happy Birthday fellas!!!

Hike, catching up, and beautiful sunset....

Our Location: Joshua Tree National Park BLM, South entrance, California


An excellent night for sleeping and I took advantage of it. Falling asleep right around 10 pm I didn’t hear anything, not a sound until 5:30 am. A wonderful warm night the temperature was 59F/15C when I went outside just about 6:15 am. 

This greeted me when I stepped outside first thing this morning...

I walked about as I snapped the sunrise pictures, and it was a beauty although I didn’t really catch the pop as the sun was behind some pretty thick cloud cover which seemed to just blow in about 10 minutes before actual sunrise time. 

Shortly after this the dark clouds obscured the sunrise...

I talked with my friend Linda for about 10 minutes this morning, just kind of touching base and catching up quickly. I also called my Aunt Shirley, left a message. Called my buddy Ron but didn’t speak long, they were in the process of hooking up and moving from the overflow area in Magic River Campground to a hook up site. 

We followed this trail today....

Back inside Riley and I made a few plans before heading out for a hike. It wasn’t our best hike and we had a great deal of difficulty figuring out the trail as Skull Rock Trail isn’t really marked well. There is a loop and a trail and one of them joins with another which joins with another but it was confusing. I’m getting ahead of myself.

We climbed in the Dogsled and headed into the park, dumped our trash in the bins and headed on through. We noticed a number of different things today as the Ocotillo is now leafing out and looking very dashing in their fabulous new green attire and adding some fascinating reds to the tops of their tall elegant spikes as their blooms are popping open and splashing colour across the desert landscapes. The Cholla (pronounced Choya) Cactus are showing more signs of their colourful yellow blooms also starting to burst forth. The Red Top Buckwheat is scattered around the desert in various places adding bursts of deep crimson while creosote bushes are sporting some very pretty yellow flowers. The Desert Junipers in their ever soft shades of green are hanging with some lush bluish berries too. We’ve also noticed the waxy  green sheen on the Mojave Desert Oaks as they glisten in the sunshine. These were a few of the changes we’ve noticed since our first trip to the other side of Joshua Tree National Park.

We journeyed today to Skull Rock, and as stated above had a bit of confusion following the trail. It wasn’t well signed in my opinion. We found the sand washes to be inviting and pleasant although the rolling sands make it tougher to walk, but Riley’s new walking stick was an excellent aid for her. We climbed over, around, and even squeezed between rocks, and boulders on the trail. What appears to be smooth rock in some places is very pebbly and not smooth at all. The rock formations are huge, some are split, standing up right, others are jumbled into a heap and scattered. Still others are a combination of the two. The colours range from yellows to oranges to browns. One thing we noticed was a line in some of the formations, in places it looked like a scar but in other places it appeared as if someone had placed a trail of rocks in the top of the bigger formations. One of the small information placards along the way explained that it is EMBEDDED into the rock formations. It is a most interesting sight to see. As you see in the pictures it’s difficult to describe but fascinating to look at. Among the many plants we noticed were of course the usual Creosote, prickly pear, pencil cactus, Tamrisk (like a cedar tree), juniper, there were also things like Mojave Desert Oak, Goatnut trees, various other cacti as well. They appeared in some cases to be literally growing out of the rocks, their roots causing splits, or showing along the top of the rocks, whiles the roots of others were no where to be seen. Interesting way for them to grow.

The many colours of the desert were apparent on today's walk including light yellows, ivory, various shades of browns and greens, along with some purple, blue, reds, whites and of course grays. We noted three little lizards on our travels as well, they are quick and hard to catch in a photo but we were fortunate. They are hard to see as they blend with their surroundings.

We did enjoy the hike for the most part, the first Skull Rock Trail was about a mile return which we managed easily but into the second Skull Rock Trail Riley wasn’t feeling too great at about a quarter mile in  and so we turned around, taking a short cut back to the Dogsled and returned home. I think we’ve been doing too much the last few days and we both will be taking the day off tomorrow, except for a few packing up items. 

I wanted to climb up there and have Riley take a picture of me but she wasn't feeling up to it. 

Back home I made myself a salad and Riley prepared spaghetti with a nice sausage meat sauce, with some cheesy garlic bread. It was very good of course and we now have left overs for another day. After that I had a nap, I was tuckered out. Riley rested but didn’t sleep and was feeling better by 4 pm.

We both read for a bit, then I grabbed the camera and headed outside to catch the sunset. I chatted with Lyle and then Shirley for a bit (Aunt-Uncle) before also catching up with my buddy Ron and his wife Sharon. The sunset was spectacular tonight and I enjoyed it immensely. This may be the most beautiful sunset since we’ve been out here in the southwest. The sky started off in a clouded white/bluish colour then suddenly the reds appeared.
