An early start at the Lordsburg Welcome Centre in New Mexico, thanks to the generator next door at 6 am, and the plunk of the big diesel beside him. Both parked in the driving lanes instead of the empty slots along the other end. Oh well, it was only one night. 

We are leaving New Mexico…

And entering the Lone Star State…

Of Texas.

Our wheels were turning by 7:30 am MDT at a crisp 44F/6.6 C. Our original destination was Van Horn, Texas but we opted to keep going. Due to a number of construction slow downs, which I think would be approximately 1 1/2 hours of moving at less than walking speed, our day extended longer than we had expected. We arrived here at 4:30 MDT/5:30 CDT, by the way, we are in Central Daylight Time now, one hour behind Ontario.

The drive was good, bumpy in places, very slow in places, but mostly just good driving. We travelled approximately 400 miles/644 klm in 8 hours, but our fuel was a little more today as we rolled up and down all day. We started our day at an elevation of 4249’, climbed to at least 4600 at the Continental Divide and are now sitting at 2625’. So keeping that in mind, we used about 35 gallons of fuel, our cheapest fill up was at $3.59 per gallon.  That brings us in at about 11.5 mpg, again, I’m happy with that all things considered.

The temps are warm now, around 70 F/21C, a very slight breeze and we are tucked up at the curb and will leave a few windows open tonight.

We have changed a time zone…

 

Our Location:

Lordsburg Welcome Centre, New Mexico

Our time at Road Runner BLM is now behind us. We spent a little quiet time there, leaving home only once or twice. Once we joined   Doug, Bill and Patsy at the Outback for pizza and a last visit for this adventure! We also waited at RV Lifestyles for an inside connection for our heater and a couple of little things.

The weather was interesting, windy, cool, warm, sunny, overcast. It was a very mixed bag. We enjoyed our time there and look forward to returning next year.

This morning , April 2, we were sitting at the Quail Run RV dump with 15 mins to go before opening at 8 am. From there we headed out, catching I-10 EAST as we start the wheels seriously turning homeward.

The roads were okay, pot holes, rough pavement, grooves, ripples, the standard stuff. We hit the road by 8:30 am, stopped twice and had a major slowdown for about 45 minutes, we drove farther than expected and were off the road at 4:30 MST, but 5:30MDT. Yes, Arizona stays on standard and New Mexico moves to daylight savings.

Just for those that wish to know, we travelled 408 miles/657 klm, approx 8 hours, at approximately 60 mph/96 klm, and we used approximately 30 gallons/113 litres. Our fill up today was the cheapest anywhere, $3.69 gallon. I’m not good at math but I think about 14 mpg, towing with a strong head wind for about an hour. We did well! The cheap fuel was in Bowie, Az at the One 9. Use the front pumps, not the truckers, easy in and out. Outside island has two pumps but only one has diesel and gas.

Our original plan was to stop at Bowie for the night but we opted to head for the Gage Rest Area, NM, however according to information Riley found, it is temporarily closed, so we dropped into the Lordsburg Welcome Centre instead. We are tucked in for the night.

Dad is getting very high easterly winds, with rain, possibly turning to snow by morning. Temps are above freezing so maybe it will stay as rain.

Gage Rest Area……

 

Our Location:

Gage Rest Area, Gage, New Mexico

We woke this morning to warm temps and sunny skies. We dumped the tanks, pulled in the slides, unplugged and pulled out. We were on the road by 8:30 am.

We rolled along all day, crossed into another time zone, which puts us in Mountain Time. We are now two hours behind Ontario. We travelled approx 500 miles, in the 10 hours we drove. We stopped multiple times to stretch our legs and take a breather.

We pulled into the rest area around 5:30 pm MST. We parked by one of the little casitas and called it a night. 

We made it farther than we expected.

We are in Texas….

 

Our Location:

Eastbound Rest Area, Van Horn, Texas

Hugs and goodbyes yesterday after happy hour and this morning Riley and I pulled out at 6:30 am Mountain Standard Time, pointing the Dogsled eastward with the Igloo rolling smoothly along behind. Windy day, lots of sunshine and plenty of leg stretches in our 418 mile/673 km journey today. We crossed 2 time zones, Mountain Daylight Time into Central Daylight Time and are currently only one hour from our Ontario time so we lost two hours and still managed to be off the road by 4:30 pm Central DT, or 2:30 pm Mountain ST. A very long day but we are both happy to have accomplished this long haul. The dogsled had a couple of laps at the drinking bowl and with a head wind managed pushing into for a good part of the trip, he was able to sip about 38 gallons of fuel for the day or one complete tankful of fuel. I have no complaints.

Texas Canyon rest area on I 10 in Arizona is just ahead.

This rest area is in Texas at the state line between New Mexico and Texas.

We crossed into Texas and are still here and will be for a few days.

A beautiful rest area in West Texas has a separate spot for RV's and Trucks.

I don't recall the name but it is very pretty and we would stay here.

I'm sure we could find it again. LOL.

It is a stunning view. 

We left Quail Ridge RV in Huachuca City at an elevation of just under 4400' and passed over the Continental Divide in New Mexico at a little bit higher altitude at a little over 4500' and here in Van Horn, Texas we are sitting at 4042'. We will begin to drop in elevation quickly tomorrow and will remain relatively low until we reach the Tennessee/Kentucky area. The temps ranged from 44F/6 C this morning at 6:30 am to 74F/23C during the afternoon and when we pulled into the rest here it was a balmy but windy 64F/17C at 4:30 pm CDT.

 

Chatted with Dad, of course, to let him know we are off the road and settled for the night. Windy there too. Aw well, it's spring!
