It was a day....

Our Location: Bluegrass Rv Park, Foley, Alabama

A warm night turned cold just as it was darkest over night. The wind blew and rattled a few things but then the sky lightened, things kind of seemed to calmed down and yet it didn't warm up any until late this afternoon. A very cold north wind blew here most of the day and even a bit into the evening. Lots of heavy clothing in evidence every where one looked!

Breakfast was a simple affair, and we headed out the door bundled with hoods, gloves and warm hopes for our walk just before 8 am here. We drove about a mile to the down town corner of Foley. Parked our loaner and walked Foley's Antique Rose trail and on further along the bike path. The walk was wonderful, the flowers, shrubs, hedges, cobblestone/brick/cement walkway, fancy welcoming brick pillars, all were very well done and cared for to make an impressive showing even in the dead of the winter, I can only imagine it's beauty in the summer. Our first leg of the journey was face first into the cold north wind. At times it was gusty but at other times only a slight stirring but the gusty was more dominant than not. ~laugh~ We walked for a long time into the wind, our 30 minutes seemed to be a lot longer. I was certain my phone-clock was broken. ~laugh~ Upon turning around we managed to walk back much faster as we had a tail wind, strong at times.

From our walk we came back home to do a few more chores in anticipation of picking up the new Dogsled tomorrow. To say I was surprised was the least I could say. My insurance company told me they could only insure the new truck for 14 days meaning I would have to return to ONTARIO within the next 14 days, have the truck pass all tests and I could license it there and come back if I wanted to. Well that wasn't going to work for me. They suggested I try to find some temporary insurance which I did and managed to get it all handled within the hour. I truly did not even think about that! It's been a learning experience. ~laugh~ So for now I'll have a truck bearing Alabama plates until I get home to Ontario in April, and have it registered in Ontario. I will also have Alabama/US auto insurance until then as well. To get insurance I also had to use an American Address. I asked for and was given permission to use the park here. Thanks to Linda for her generous aid!!!! I wonder how a Canadian trailer plate, and an Alabama truck plate will sit at the border crossing? ~laugh~ Oh well, one issue at a time.

I also called Mr. Manley (the sales rep at the dealership) to set up an appointment time tomorrow to pick up my new toy. Tomorrow at 9 am we head down to the dealership to give back the loaner and pick up the new to us Dogsled. Then it's off to the DMV  here to have it plated, as it's already insured.

After chatting with Mr Mark Manley I headed off to Absolute Insurance to get my insurance slip. Nice lady named Wanda was very helpful and I have insurance that I pay monthly until I don't need it any longer. I also tried to cancel my insurance for the old Dogsled with my insurance company back home, that has been a real pain in the ass. They sent me an electronic form that I have to print, sign, scan and send back, except I don't have a printer and I don't know any where to do that. So I tried a different angle, I wrote out a cancellation letter, took a picture of it and sent that to them. Nope, wouldn't accept it, I need to SNAIL MAIL them a letter saying I cancel my auto insurance. Hmmm...Insurance is a pain, isn't it?  Can you believe it's barely lunch time?

Lunch time and I was starving. Had a huge garden salad for lunch and tried some new Sundried Tomato with Basil thin crackers. They are delicious. Going to have get some of these to take home with us. Good stuff. ~laugh~

I managed to get outside and read for a bit this afternoon as the sun warmed up the air and the wind died down to just a light occasional breeze. I even had to come inside to change from jeans and heavier shirt to capri's and a light t-shirt. It was that warm. Managed to help Miss Pat next door to carry her laundry into their 5'er. She said she could manage but she has a bad leg and would have had to make a couple of trips. I managed to do it in one.

About 4:30 pm I came inside and began to prep dinner. Sat down to read some more and enjoy a new to me book. Pulled the big door shut when I came inside and shut all the windows as well. It was colder in the Igloo than it was outside. ~laugh~ The days are getting to have more daylight hours as I've been noticing a bit more each day. It's not dark here at 6 pm but it's just dusk. It used to be dark before 5.

Outside about 6:30 pm to BBQ dinner. Was colder than I expected but still not too terribly bad. I used Riley's new chair which helps to block the wind. The wind blowing up the leg of my jeans was chilling me to the bone until I wrapped a blanket around my legs. After that I was pretty toasty. 

Dinner was excellent. We thought we'd do without the potatoes tonight.

Dinner tonight was Sweet Basil-Rosemary Veggies and Chicken Breasts smothered in Roger's BBQ sauce. It was excellent. We both enjoyed it. I couldn't eat my entire piece of chicken and like last night I put half in the fridge again. I think one of us will be having it for lunch tomorrow. It's good stuff.

Managed a quick chat with Ed our neighbour, he's all excited about seeing our new Dogsled. ~laugh~ I think he's more excited than I am. He's leaving on Saturday and was disappointed that he wasn't going to get to see it. I had to laugh, told him it's just a big white truck. ~laugh~ I will admit, I'm a bit excited myself. ~laugh~ 

Seemed funny to be driving around with lots of window stickers and no plate. ~laugh~

A quick clean up inside and out, trip to the dumpster and a quick shower for me rounded off the evening. Edited some pics and write this blog will pretty much end my night. I'll play a few games on my iPad and then wander off to dream land.

Almost busy kind of day....

Overnight was very warm, should have kept the windows open but only had the vent open. It was very humid today as well, the fog this morning making the air seem very misty and damp. Warm today but overcast, not nice for sitting outside but nice enough to have the big door open until after dinner tonight. 

After breakfast we immediately loaded up the 'rental' with our dirty laundry, filling the entire rear hatch. It's either a very small hatch or we have a lot of laundry. I'll let you decide which it might be. ~laugh~ From that chore we headed out to S. Pecan Street dead end section to do our daily walk. It was misty and humid but we managed to get our two trips accomplished in just over an hour.

It was 9:50 am when we finished up our walk and making a left hand turn onto Michigan Ave we headed about a half mile or so to the laundromat. Once we had our stuff all loaded into the washers I stopped to chat with Carol of Neil and Carol, friends of Ed & Sue, our neighbours. They are all leaving on Saturday to head to Texas to visit with Sue's brother and sister for a month. Neil & Carol, Ed & Sue are real life neighbours in their home state of Missouri, living literally next door to each other. 

It was noon before we finished the laundry and started to load it in the vehicle. A quick trip home to hang up and put away the clean laundry netted us a finish time of 12:30 pm. It was back into the car to head to the train museum as today was the day we were sure we'd manage to get there in time to see everything. Hm.....sign on the door....sorry but we're closed today from 12:30 to 1:30 pm for a meeting. ~laugh~ Can you believe that? Rick Ferroni, Murphy is still here. ~laugh~

We left the Train Museum heading south to the Wally World as we needed a few groceries. We wandered around the store for a bit, picking up a few things, and then a few more, then a few more and before we knew it the cart was half full. Ever happen to you? ~laugh~ You know it does, you just don't want to admit it. 

Home to put away the groceries and settle in for the rest of the day. It was already 1:45 pm. Lunch was eaten inside today as the sun never did make an appearance. Reading, I finished my book and started a new one. Oh no, I've read this one, started another new one, oh no, deja vu, read this one too. ~laugh~ Time to head to the clubhouse to see if I can find some new ones to read, as Riley is using my Kobo. Trip to the dumpster to rid the Igloo of the chicken carcass Riley cleaned for lunch. You know she loves those rotisserie chickens from Walmart.  Stop at the clubhouse to trade some books, managed to sit down and chat with Miss Charlotte and Miss Charlotte for a bit, had a quick hello with Bill and Eileen as well. Yes, there are two Miss Charlotte's here.

Left the clubhouse, came home and did a few emails that needed my attention.  I even got out the iron and some starch to make some shirts look like they should instead of all those curled up hems. A couple of pants legs as well needed some attention. After that I read some more, looked up and it was time to start prepping dinner. Within 10 minutes of finishing the prep work it was time to start cooking. An hour later, we're enjoying our meal. 

Tonight we had Santa Fe Rice, Basil-Thyme Veggies, Smokey Bourbon Chicken Breasts. I can tell you from personal knowledge it was excellent. No left overs, so you will have to take my word for it. ~laugh~ 

Dinner was yummy.....

Quick clean up inside and outside, trip to the dumpster, home to read a bit more, and finally head off in our own  direction. 

 

A belated Happy Birthday to my friend Roger. His birthday was yesterday but it slipped my mind until late last night. Roger is a southern gentleman and an extremely nice guy. Happy Birthday Roger!!!

A nice day, nothing major or exciting but still nice. Hope you enjoyed your day as much as we enjoyed our day.

Different kind of day today....

No pics tonight. Just a short post.

Nice night, not too cool and the sun warmed up everything today to a toasty temp. Truly a wonderful day temp wise. 

Turned in the original Dogsled to Southern Chevrolet this morning. They've loaned me a little 2016 SUV until the new Dogsled comes into my possession later this week. I'm excited about that and looking forward to the new hound!!!~laugh~ More on that when I get it. 

We walked this morning back again at S. Pecan Street, it's a nice place, quiet, not much traffic, close by and easy to to do. By the time we finished that it was noon. We then headed out to the little airfield on Cedar Street to see if any of the drones were up and about. The gentleman told me the best day is Saturday. So maybe we'll go back on Saturday. We also stopped in at the Outlet mall stores specifically to TJ Maxx to see if we could find a phone case for Riley, but no luck.

We found a post office so I could mail a cheque to Coastal Solar as well. The exchange issue with a cheque is causing me to think about getting a bank account here in the south and doing things in that manner from now on but I'll have to check into it before I do anything. 

I spent the rest of the afternoon reading in the sunshine today. Inside around 4:30 and since I had prepped dinner when I made myself a garden salad for lunch there was nothing left to do except cook it. Which I did, starting around 6:20 pm. We had Dill Potatoes with Onions, Oregano-Parsley Veggies and turkey dogs. It was all very good and we enjoyed a change.

Clean up inside and out, trip to the dumpster and then I walked on down to Ed & Sue's friend's campsite, his name is Neil but I don't know her name. Vern, Garry, and a couple of others I didn't know were also there. They were having a campfire and I stayed for a few minutes and then came home. 

So you see a different kind of day. Seems funny not to have a truck at my disposal. ~laugh~ Soon though I will.

A trip back in time......

Overnight lows were warm enough to allow us to shut the heater off and still feel comfortable in the morning getting out of bed. Today's temps were excellent and we slathered on the sunscreen just ensure we wouldn't get burnt on our outing. 

Breakfast was the usual quick, painless effort. After that we read for about an hour before loading up the Dogsled and heading off to Florida. Sounds like a long trip huh? Well it wasn't, within about 15 minutes we were crossing the river from Alabama to Florida. A short drive away is Pensacola with numerous things to entertain a person. We took in Historic Pensacola Village today.

I've been there before but it was a first time for Riley (first time that it was open so we could actually go INTO the buildings not just walk around them like the Monday we visited when everything was closed), and she seemed to enjoy it. The tour guide left a few things to be desired but she managed to get us through it without too much trouble. She dwelt on things that weren't of interest to us such as length explanations about wall coverings, and window drapes, gossipy things and didn't spend enough time on the bones of the buildings such as windows, door taxes, incomes, etc. Riley and I both found her accent a bit difficult as she talked too fast. ~laugh~ Overall though we enjoyed the tour and will return again probably Friday to see if we can get a different tour guide for the tour. Our ticket purchased for $8 each today is good for a week!

Also part of the Village experience is the time lines depicted in various buildings that show the progression of Pensacola as a settlement/town/city. It's various ownership by different countries such as Spain, France, England etc. There is an interesting time line from the business angle in which it gives actual statistics for import/export from the cities earliest days until recent times. Cotton and lumber being among some of the top exports over the years. It allows one to see the growth of industry or the lack of growth or change in industry over the years. It's major industry being shipping for a long time, as a port it was highly profitable even in times of trouble, and played a key role in the early years of a young growing nation. 

A FLINT mantle around the fireplace helped to keep and distribute the heat, and were used in the 'public' parts of the house.

Also depicted in their time lines is the issue of slavery, and the civil war. A number of exhibits depicted the early struggles of blacks, free blacks, women and early life in the new city. The time lines moved along into the 1900's and showed the coming of new modern appliances, and conveniences such as washing machines, toasters, electric stoves, refrigerators, as well as the telephone, tv, and radio. There was a number of wagons, buggies, bicycles, tricycles, and even a train engine.

It was an interesting morning that both entertained and educated us. We enjoyed the TT Wentworth Museum as well. It had numerous small displays including one dedicated to Coca-cola. That display held a number of old Coca-cola ice boxes, vending machines, dispensers, as well as items that displayed the Coca-cola logo. It also held various bottles, cans, and posters that I remember as a kid. Some of the displays were very crowded and hard to see all the items in the display cabinet but it was still interesting.

After we left the Historic Pensacola Village area we walked down to the little harbour. Not much to see but they have made a nice little sitting area that allows one to sit and watch out over the water. I'm certain it would be a great place to sit when the ships are moving about.

From there we headed homeward. A few stops along the way but nothing exciting. We arrived home about 1:30 pm and had a quick chat with Ed of Ed & Sue (our next door neighbours) and Neil (Ed & Sue's REAL neighbour back home in Missouri). I dropped Riley at the Igloo and went out to do a couple of things on my own. More on that at another time. Home by 4 pm I was tired and hungry, since I'd missed lunch. I came home to find Miss Riley sitting outside enjoying the sunshine and warmth. I'm glad she had some time to herself. She commented that she feels very safe here in the park which is a good thing. I of course being a smart ass said," Well of course you feel safe here you can out run all of these old geezers. " ~laugh~

Chatted with Ed & Sue for a bit after I got home and then inside to grab a quick snack and just sit down to unwind. About 5:30 pm we prepped dinner and I sat down to read for a bit. Around 6:30 pm I headed outside to BBQ dinner. It was nice outside, not too cold at all. I still bundled up but I didn't come inside chilled like I have a few times. 

Dinner was Dill Potatoes with onions, Parsley-Oregano Veggies, and Pork Loin Chops with Georgia Peach BBQ sauce. We followed that up with a bit of Cookies and Cream Ice Cream.  MMmmmmmmmm...good stuff!!

Dinner was excellent and not just because I was hungry. ~laugh~

Quick clean up inside and out, walk to the dumpster and that was it for the day. I came upstairs to edit the pictures we took today and to write this post. Riley went off to do whatever it is she does back there in her space. I think I can hear her snoring so that takes some of the guess work out of it. ~laugh~

A most excellent day......

A warm overnight last night left us with a warm start to the day today. It just kept getting better from there as temps soared into the 70's today. Brilliant blue skies and warm sunshine, a light breeze added to make it just about as perfect as we could wish a day to be.

Usually I read or browse the net when I wake up around 6 am, but this morning I dressed and made myself presentable, ambled my way up to the clubhouse to have a chat with a few folks there. Roy, Ed, Neil, and Vern. It was a mix of Roy, Ed and I for a bit, then Vern came along, Roy left, and Neil showed up, Vern left, then I left. So Ed was the only constant. ~laugh~ I straggled home a little after 7:30 am to find Miss Riley up and about.

We decided to head out and pick up a few groceries that we needed. So off to Wally's World in downtown Foley to get the above mentioned things, from there we went looking for a haircut, noticing a Super Cuts almost directly across the road we had to go past and turn around. We managed a quick unexpected stop before the hair cut, the stop was right next door to the Super Cuts,  but more on that at another time. I had a trim, Riley had a cut, she seems pretty happy with it, but I think she should have gotten a bit more taken off the front, she'll be complaining it's in her eyes before long, which was the reason to have it cut as it's in her eyes. ~laugh~

From there we headed back to the Junction of US 59 and US 98, which is close to home here at the park. We stopped at the Visitor's center for a quick peek and found a map of some walking routes but in the town which can be quite busy at times. We'd like something with less exhaust fumes and noise if we can find it. 

Not quite ready to open but getting close, the whole bush was loaded with these buds.

We did however check out a few of the side streets which were somewhat quieter and had less fumes as well. It was only about a half hour walk but it was better than not walking. The flower pics in the post are all from our downtown walk, they are ALL camellia's, just different varieties. They also bloom in the wild here along the roadways, mostly in the light pink colour but there are others as well. 

I think might be my favourite one.

Our walk started at the Clock Tower, we toured a couple of blocks before crossing on the Pedestrian Walkway above US 59, and heading off into some backstreets on the opposite side of the road.

From there is was back to the Igloo. Riley put away the groceries while I cleaned out the inside of the Dogsled, it was getting a bit ugly. ~laugh~ It was just a quick clean but we'll once again be able to put our feet on the floor and see out the windows. ~laugh~

After such a taxing task it was time for lunch. Of course I grabbed my garden salad, book, cap and headed outside to sit in the sun. Riley even came out and sat in the sun. We were very lazy, and sat in the sun reading all afternoon. I tipped my chair back against the Igloo and just soaked up the rays. It was truly a marvelous day!!!

About 4:30 pm I finally came inside as it was getting cool outside but I think perhaps I was just cold from having had so much sun. I put on some long pants, and a shirt to help keep my warm. Prepped dinner, did some internet research, checked facebook and read a bit more.

Shortly after 6: 15 pm I headed out to start dinner on the BBQ. I have it all worked out, I open up the side cubbie, turn on the light, that along with the outside lights on the Igloo gives me enough light to cook with. I place my chair right beside the cubbie to get light on my book to read between turning things on the grill. Miss Pat (from Roy and Pat) made fun of me reading by a night light she called it. ~laugh~ I explained I was actually cooking dinner, not just sitting outside in the dark reading. ~laugh~ 

Tonight's dinner was good!!!

Around 7:30 pm I brought dinner inside and we enjoyed a nice meal of Dill Potatoes with onions, Italian Garlic Veggies and chicken breast smothered with a new smokey bourbon flavour BBQ sauce. It was pretty good!!

Clean up inside and out, walk to the dumpster and played a game of Yahtzee. I won, I won....

Now it's time to head off to do our own thing, Riley to her room, me to mine. 

There you have it, that was our day. We enjoyed it a great deal!!! Tomorrow we have plans to head back into Pensacola. I think we'll be heading into Pensacola a few days this week to do some sight seeing.

A totally lazy day here....

A very cool over night with a cold blustery day today. The wind, along with a lack of sunshine kept the temps in the mid 50F/12.7 C range all day. A few more days of this kind of weather before we hit a spell of nice warm days. Can't wait. ~laugh~ A few hardy souls braved the temps with short sleeves but they were few and far between. Out of the wind of course it wasn't too bad but still needed a heavier sweater. 

 

Not many pics tonight as we didn't do much of anything.

We debated about a few things today but in the end just decided to stay home and do things around here, and perhaps I could scratch a couple of things off my to do list. A leisurely breakfast and a bit of reading started my morning off. I had to give breakfast a second try as the first one was aborted with milk that tasted just a bit off. ~laugh~ You know we shopped yesterday right? I didn't get milk. ~laugh~ 

 

I decided I needed to defrost the fridge and freezer as the ice build up in the fridge was starting to spread to most of the fins, instead of just one or two. Two pots of boiling water on the stove, then into the compartments meant the defrost went pretty fast. In about 45 minutes I was finished both top and bottom. We decided on turkey burgers for dinner, so took those out while I was at it.

 

This is the driveway across the street from Bluegrass in a mobile trailer park. We walked it's one road today to get out of the wind but still found it cold.

 

After about an hour I was looking for something to do, I started testing out the new shelf blockers we bought to use in our pantry now that we have sliding shelves. This will stop them from sliding out while we travel. Of course as I tested them I noticed a few things that could stand a tidying up, one shelf lead to another to another. You get the idea. I tidied up the whole pantry. ~laugh~ After that I decided I needed to take a look at the silverware drawer as it wasn't closing properly. Tightened up some screws, added an extra one, voila, it's fixed. Next I had to go outside and get my drill to work on the pan drawer again. Miss Charlotte of Vern and Charlotte was walking by, stopped to chat and ended up coming in for a bit to chatter with both of us. I felt awful about the state of the Igloo, pans all over the countertop, drawer out on the floor, screwdrivers everywhere. ~laugh~ Isn't that always the way, someone stops by when the house is at it's worst. ~laugh~ She filled us in on the local pizza place, and Lambert's the home of the throwed rolls. Yes, throwed and rolls. They throw rolls at you, dinner rolls, if you don't catch 'em it's okay, they'll keep throwing until you do. ~laugh~ 

Working on the pan drawer after Miss Charlotte left I think I may have found the problem, we shall see if my fix continues to hold or if it was just a wishful momentary fix. ~laugh~ I think the slide it's self wasn't straight, that whoever put it in didn't ensure it was level. It is also a bit too small, didn't fit as well as it should, so I added cardboard shim for now to see if that works, but only to the front, when I added one to the back also it seemed to make the drawer bind when moving. If you recall I used a thin piece of wood last time but it was too thick, so I thought the cardboard would at least let me know if it will fix the actual sliding problem. If the cardboard shim continues to work I'll head to the lumber store to get a proper shim, but I don't want to do so until I know it'll work.

After that it was time for lunch while we watched a movie called Deep Impact with Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall, it was pretty good. Oh and the guy that played Frodo Baggins in Lord of the Rings was also in it. Much younger than he was in LOTR. We both enjoyed the movie but it wasn't one of Morgan Freeman's better ones. 

 

Time to take a quick walk around the park, but it was too cold for us to go far. I know it's not really cold but it is when yesterday was 25 degrees warmer. ~laugh~ We only made about 3 rounds, it was enough. We chatted with Linda, Charlotte, (not Miss Charlotte of Vern and Charlotte), and Brian for a bit then headed inside to get warm.

Reading some more, had to lay down for a bit as my hip seems to be having fits today for some reason. Seems better now but earlier it was throbbing like crazy. I'm still trying to get the results of my blood work or at least have them sent to my doctor. Do you recall it was late December I had the blood work done in Albany, Ga. It shouldn't be this difficult to get my own results. Had they told me it would be this much trouble I would have just had them faxed to the dr, but now I'm not sure if they've even done that. I'm trying to find that out.  Anyway, I'm off topic again. My train of thought just wanders around like a drunk in a bad wind storm. ~laugh~

About the time I was thinking I should be doing something about prepping dinner, I realized I just couldn't be outside to BBQ tonight, since my hip was feeling better there was no way I was going outside to stand in the cold while cooking. So we changed our dinner plans and had spaghetti, meatballs and tomatoes with chilies. It was pretty good. We'll do the burgers when it warms up. 

We played one game of Yahtzee, no I didn't win, I lost by 6 points. ~laugh~  We BOTH rolled Yahtzees. ~laugh~ I still think she cheats. 

We've been hearing someones tv for a few hours now, it seems really loud and we've never heard it this loud before. We mostly just ignored it, as it wasn't too bad while we were up and moving about but once things quieted down and we started off in our own directions it seemed to get louder, maybe because the Igloo was quieter. At first I thought it was coming from Roy and Pat's as Roy is very hard of hearing. I donned my shoes, and a hoodie, stepped outside to listen, nope, not coming from Roy and Pat's trailer. Stepped around to the other side where Ed and Sue are living, sure enough, it's coming from there. I stepped closer and realized their outside speakers were on. ~laugh~ We've done that as well without realizing it, we however were lucky we were in the Pit when it happened and no one was around to hear it except maybe Bambi. So I knocked on the door and asked them if they knew the outside speakers were on, of course they didn't and now they've shut them, quiet is all around us once again. ~laugh~ 

So as you can see or have read, it's been a pretty lazy kind of day here but a productive one all the same. We have plans to pick up some milk, cheese and a rotisserie chicken tomorrow. Other than that we shall see.
