Our Location: Near Borrego Springs, CA
It’s cooler here at night than we’ve been used to but we add an extra blanket and enjoy the sunshine more when it appears. Today however was very cool with lots of folks wearing puffy vests and jackets as they were out and about. The wind kept us indoors most of the day with only about an hour outside to read. We didn’t reach above 57F/13.9 C. I know that doesn’t sound cold to the folks at home but believe me it was cold.

Playing with the zoom lens, you can see the area of Borrego Springs far off in the distance. |

The many faces of the mountains in the area. |
We stayed inside looking out and enjoying the sights. The place has filled up with weekend warriors, big small and in between. They come in packs, doubles and solo. They bring multiple vehicles for the same family. Our newest neighbour was interesting to see coming in. Dad and son along with the dog in the truck with a small dune buggy in the back towing a fairly large home on wheels. Mom, daughter and small child in the SUV behind them pulling a trailer with the family side by side with a generator in the back of the SbyS. They were barely set up before they were off in their rides across the desert with dust flying and giggles sounding.
|
They are serious about their fun. Even the little toddler was excited to be riding. |
|
The BLM parking lot on Henderson Canyon Road is filling up quickly too. |
Flags abound here in the area, one group has as many as 7 between two rigs. With today’s wind the flags were flapping and snapping. Kites were also out today in the wind, looked like they were having a good time flying them. The rides are varied and numerous. A few dirt bikes, a number of three wheelers, a couple of quads, a number of dune buggies and even a few bigger side by sides. Jeeps and SUV’s are also here adding to the fun and excitement. Flashing lights, stiffy’s (long ariel with flag attached) and various engine sounds mixed with yells, dust and laughter were certainly entertaining today. I can tell you that I wouldn’t want to stay among them for a month but for a few days I think we’ll enjoy the activity. Some great photo opportunities if one is quick enough.

Flags, flags, flags. |

Kites and helo's. |
Other than Riley having a fire tonight the day has been very quiet and restful. Entertaining and amusing as well just by looking out the window. I’m amazed how many folks seem to land here each hour. Not even the cold wind can deter them. They are a hardy bunch.

Big, small and in between, of various ages and sizes. |

There are two different little fellows here. The smaller one is quite a dare devil. You can see he even managed to catch some air in the middle picture. |
A news update on Jason and Leah, last night they reached the Minnesota/North Dakota border staying near Fargo. Today a text from Jason assured me they weren’t having any issues with blizzard conditions as they crossed N. Dakota. (The weather had blizzard conditions listed in N. Datkota). They were having blue skies and making great time. They were headed toward Great Fall, Montana. I have no doubt they will reach close to their goal. They are gaining an hour with each time zone and so they can stretch their driving hours if they wish. Both are young and capable of driving so I’m certain the long days aren’t having too much effect on them.

You can get anything in camouflage. The truck came behind the motor home and left at the same time, so I assume they were together. |
|
They are parked everywhere. |
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed your day.
|
Rigs come in various sizes, colours and shapes too. |
Until next time.. take care, be safe,

The green and orange are led lights on an ariel and flash as he goes. It's getting dark and they are still coming in. |

Hope all the Weekend Warriors don't mess up your Peace and Quiet.
ReplyDeleteBe Safe and Enjoy!
It's about time.
Thanks Rick. I don't believe they will. I don't mind the noise and I enjoy watching the folks having a good time. Time off and away from the bustle of work and school is meant to be a good time. I remember being a kid, I remember when my girls were kids. They are making their memories here and now and I hope they make some good ones.

Deb,
ReplyDeleteGood for you rolling with the action. How come you know all the names of the dirt rigs? Most girls don't and a lots of the men folk I know don't know what they are called either. Fest up, are you a dirt biker? :O)
Bob
Hi Bob. Welcome to A long and lonesome highway, I hope you enjoy your visits.
DeleteI grew up in farm country, we had bikes, sleds and so forth when I was growing up. Sorry disappoint you Bob but I don't ride much of anything but I will admit I do miss it.

It is always fun to be right in with action of all these guys having a ball. We spent a couple of weekends years ago in the Imperial Sand Dunes with a large group off 13 rigs, including the little ones, side by sides, sand rails, dune buggies, jeeps and we even toured the dunes with them so much fun .
ReplyDeleteActually it makes me kind of homesick or maybe it makes me feel like I belong. I'm not sure which one. Always someone around on a wheelie thing in our summer location, dirt bikes, quads, motorcycles, etc. Lots of giggles and snorts in the air too. I enjoy watching the sights, sounds and the smells of the whole thing. I wouldn't want to be surround for a month but for a few days I'm going to enjoy it.

Loving your pics of everyone out with their toys! Between 2005 and probably 2010 we spent so much time out in the dunes with our kids, grandkids and friends. It was so much fun. Eventually they all got rid of their toys but we kept ours. Used to be quite the party. The three wheelers they don't even sell anymore, as they were deemed too dangerous. So that's an oldy but a goody for sure. Enjoy your people watching!
ReplyDeleteI didn't think the 3 wheelers were sold any more either. The bunch with all the flags has two in really good condition. They are tippy though you can see that when they try to turn a corner too sharp or try doing a donut. Although I did notice that if they turn too sharp it's like the engine cuts out or brakes or something. Since I was watching through the window I couldn't hear the engine.
DeleteAround the farm back at our summer spot they just keep getting bigger, faster and louder toys. Save the old ones for fall back, parts or for the next generation of riders coming up. Both my great niece and great nephew (5 & 3) have been enjoying the experience of learning to ride small quads. They are a hoot to watch.

Great photos once again. On this trip we spent time at tne Imperial Dunes.....our first time. During the week it was so quiet. The weekends were noisy. I enjoyed both! Elva Shannon
ReplyDeleteThanks Elva. We all need to de-stress and if tearing around on a screaming machine is the way to do it for some folks, who am I to rain on their parade? We were all young once and life is for the living to enjoy so I think within reason they should. Like you I enjoy both the busy-ness of the fun and excitement, but the peace will be nice when they all head out in a few days too.

It is fun watching all the families arrive to enjoy their weekend. It does get noisy but knowing it will be short lived just makes the people watching fun. When we were there last February we had a group come in next to us at night all in rented Class C's we could here them setting up and in the morning they were amazingly in a circle...lol
ReplyDeleteWhat we did not appreciate was a couple down from us who were gone all day and left there dogs inside barking. They were large dogs and Tom and I felt sorry for them.
Loved your pictures today of the mountains and the kids.
It is indeed fun to watch and see the excitement on the faces, young and old.
DeleteThe dog issues are a pet peeve of mine. I'll just say I agree with you and leave it at that.

Interesting to see all the modes of transport and camping. The camouflage coach would be able to disappear completely in the right environment.Looks like you are enjoying watching. The noise can become too much but for a short time, without the dust can be fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteThe dust is an issue when they start doing donuts right beside us however, I can tell you it's almost always the adults and not the kids that are causing most of the dust around all of the rigs. It's easy to tell who thinks of others and those that are thoughtless and don't care about anyone else. It's a life lesson that is learned at an early age or not ever learned, I think.
DeleteIt's funny how different kinds of noises affect people differently. I find the night time voices, generators, blaring music and fireworks much more disturbing than the day time noises. I think this may be a very loud place to be for New Year's Eve and while it won't be the toys and day time things that chase us away, it will be the night time noises.
Take care, be safe,
Deb
Lots of desert warriors. If you haven't driven through Split Mountain just south of Octillio Wells it's worth the drive.
ReplyDeleteThanks Doug. We are enjoying the amusement out the window right here but another year I think we will be parking at Ocotillo Wells, it's just much bigger space.
