A quiet day here in the southwest….

A quiet day here at our home dirt, I popped into Fry’s for a few things for today’s happy hour. Riley stayed home as she is still battling this sinus cold. She is doing better but the lingering cough is not fun.

As I was heading into town I noticed John and Brenda were packing up and getting ready to head out. I didn’t stop as I didn’t want to interrupt the process, we all know how difficult that is. They were gone when I came home. We wish them safe travels and good times.

Happy hour was a quiet affair, due to a bit of a breeze and cooler temps we enjoyed our third day of Christmas in the Igloo with some cheese, crackers and wine.  It was nice being able to host as the Igloo is now spacious enough for us to do so.

Sorry, we already started eating… 
With a moveable island we can place it anywhere.

A very quiet day....

 

 

Our Location: 

North of MM 4, Ogilby Road, Winterhaven, California

 

A coolish morning but the sun shone all day. I didn't wear shorts due to the coldish north wind but I did enjoy a nice walk, noticed a few blooms but otherwise the day was uneventful.  The wind while gusty at times was not unbearable but I was happy when I headed home after my walk. 

We left off here. Those pipes feed water from this rock tank to the long steel tanks that look like rail cars.

The rocks are extremely smooth, with little dribbles of water here and there.

No pebbles or sand on the rocks, just in the little holes.

Today's photos pick up where yesterday's left off. Jerry and I walked down to the bottom of the ravine and found a few small tanks or indentations in the rocks, but the waterway itself interested me. The rocks were extremely smooth, with little to no sand or debris on them. It was interesting. We could find no evidence of a mine that would require this elaborate set up. Plus it would have been very hard to get the water up to any type of mine, the lines all ran the wrong way. They came down with indications of release, not up with indications of pumps. Screens over the ends of pipes indicate that the water was going into not out of them. Enjoy the walk up the river bed. 

 

It was easy walking. Jerry is ahead at the curve.

It is easy to imagine the water roaring down here, crashing and smashing.

There are "lines" in all of  the rocks, everywhere you look. Straight and solid.

A very quiet day.....

 

Our Location:

A walk this morning, a drive for Riley and I, a couple of visits with Doug and that was our day. A few photos that have been left over from other days, except the first two, this mornings Moon and Sunrise shots.

I chatted with my Dad last night, he called to see how things were going. He and my brother Rick are busy cutting wood and keeping very busy. Always good to do that, keep busy, it keeps them out of trouble. My sister in law Janet called this morning as we were finishing up our walk and we chatted for a long time, it's good to get caught up. Dennis has even played a little golf with his new hip. Sounds as if it's going very well. We will be slipping farther into California in late January to visit them in Indian Wells.

 

 

I think I see an octopus! Why not I saw a dolphin the other day right? It's an Ocotillo laying on the desert floor.

Trees in the wash as we walk from American Girl Mine Road back home.

The water cuts a certain path as it lessens and leaves a bank.

The water must come at a tremendous speed down there to this curve.

Back at Tumco....These grates cover holes in the ground, the one on top is a mine shaft.

A sage bush is flowering.

I truly like the looks of these mountains.

I have followed that path down on the right but I don't remember where it goes. 

They look easy to climb but they are not.

The colours are so different but the veining is a whitish colour in all of the mountains in the Cargos.

A photo kind of day....

Our Location: Empire Ranch, Vail, Arizona

 

The bad weather hasn't really happened. A little rain, with a few pellets of snow, and of course the wonderful ever present wind with huge gusts that would rock us a bit. We pulled the slides in about half way for the entire day and night. This morning there is little wind but it will rise as the day goes on. Looking around the neighbourhood. 

 

 Riley noticed this rainbow yesterday. 

 If you look closely to the left you will see it was a double rainbow. The outside rainbow is very dim. 

 

 They moved the big machines in yesterday to continue to remove a lot of scrub trees. 

 Can you see them better now? 

Lots of clouds over there.

 

 

 The rig on the top is at the far edge of the group site and furthest away from us. The two below on the right are friends and friends of the top photo (Air Stream), as well as the rig(another Air Stream) that can't be seen because it is behind the motor home in the left hand photo. The bottom left is the Air Stream directly across the road from us, you can see the Igloo nose in the photo. These folks have 4 kids. The photo on the bottom right shows the final rig on this stretch of road and he is way off in the distance near the kiosk. Earlier before I took these photos there was another motor home in the turning loop by the water tanks which are south of us and van parked between the guy way far off and the first Air Stream.

 

 

 It was an interesting sky off in the distance yesterday in the late afternoon.

 For all that darkness, we didn't get much of anything here. 

This morning it looks much less ominous but still not sunny and bright.

Bit breezy here and cool....

Our Location: Near American Girl Mine Road, BLM, CA

 

If you are tired of sunrise and sunset photos you may want to skip today's post. 

 

 

The beginning of sunset last night.

 

An amazing view.

And then it died away.

 

A quiet night, not as warm as Friday night but not cold either. A bit of a breeze when I stepped out this morning to wait for sunrise. Cool enough that my hands were cool, leaning toward cold and I would have benefited from some light gloves. I did however forget them and so I simply moved one hand at a time into my pocket, while holding the camera with the other.

This morning's walk was also my walk for the day, a little under 2.5 miles in a bit less than an hour.  I was chilled by the time I got back even with the sun up. The wind, the wind, the wind. Not a hard or fast wind but a cool wind. 

 

Not to be forgotten. The moon was shining brightly but very high in the western sky. I've been told this may be referred as a Cold Moon. Although perhaps not now as it is no longer a full moon. 

 

In the eastern sky, the sun is showing off again. 

 

Biscuits for breakfast. Not something we have often but we savour them when we do have 'em. Yummy. Since today is pasta for lunch day I didn't have anything to prep for lunch. Miss Riley insists on doing this cooking solo. Who am I to disagree? Lunch was good. 

 

It's almost up.

And through the Palo Verde Tree we can see it ever so slightly, The rays causing the tree's spiky branches to shine. 

 

The wind has steadily increased all day, dropping off completely for a few minutes, just enough to make you think it's gone and bang, it's instantly back again. Not hard, but cool, very cool. Too cool to sit outside unless one is wrapped up a good amount even out of the wind. However we managed to keep the big door open most of the day and the vents but we wore slippers and a sweater too. 

 

It's slipping up over the lower edges now.

But not over the higher ones yet.

 

A quiet day, except for the few comings and goings around us. Surfed the net, did some reading, did a bit of putzing around, you know how it goes. We have a few plans for this week but I'll tell you more about those in future posts. 

 

 

 These poles are fenced off in a section close to Ogilby Road, along with a number of items. This photo shows how long they are. There is no break in them, they run the entire length of the photo. 

More than one pile of them too. Quite long, don't ya think?
