Our Location:
Eastbound Rest Area, Van Horn, Texas
Hugs and goodbyes yesterday after happy hour and this morning Riley and I pulled out at 6:30 am Mountain Standard Time, pointing the Dogsled eastward with the Igloo rolling smoothly along behind. Windy day, lots of sunshine and plenty of leg stretches in our 418 mile/673 km journey today. We crossed 2 time zones, Mountain Daylight Time into Central Daylight Time and are currently only one hour from our Ontario time so we lost two hours and still managed to be off the road by 4:30 pm Central DT, or 2:30 pm Mountain ST. A very long day but we are both happy to have accomplished this long haul. The dogsled had a couple of laps at the drinking bowl and with a head wind managed pushing into for a good part of the trip, he was able to sip about 38 gallons of fuel for the day or one complete tankful of fuel. I have no complaints.

A beautiful rest area in West Texas has a separate spot for RV's and Trucks.

I don't recall the name but it is very pretty and we would stay here.

I'm sure we could find it again. LOL.

Love the gardens.

It is a stunning view. |

We left Quail Ridge RV in Huachuca City at an elevation of just under 4400' and passed over the Continental Divide in New Mexico at a little bit higher altitude at a little over 4500' and here in Van Horn, Texas we are sitting at 4042'. We will begin to drop in elevation quickly tomorrow and will remain relatively low until we reach the Tennessee/Kentucky area. The temps ranged from 44F/6 C this morning at 6:30 am to 74F/23C during the afternoon and when we pulled into the rest here it was a balmy but windy 64F/17C at 4:30 pm CDT.
Chatted with Dad, of course, to let him know we are off the road and settled for the night. Windy there too. Aw well, it's spring!
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you had a fantastic day.
Until next time...
Take care, stay safe,
Deb
You put in a lot of miles today and continued safe travels for you and Riley.
ReplyDeleteThanks, we did but they were a good first day. It's always easier on the first day to go farther, I think excitement helps.

Safe travels. It was very nice of you to help out Patsy and Bill.
ReplyDeleteThanks Becky. Friends do those things for friends, so it was an easy thing to do.

Thanks for all the great photos and blogs this winter. Hope you have a safe trip home. Vern
ReplyDeleteThanks Vern. I'm going to TRY to blog once a month or so and give you all a little view of our Rock!! Try of course is the big word there. LOL

Safe Traveling. The wind has been very strong down here on the Texas coast near Corpus Christi the last few days. The higher plains near you are frequently excessive winds also.
ReplyDeleteThanks Barney. Yes it's true about the winds but we've had them most of the winter this year and no matter which direction I travel in Texas it's always a head wind. I'm not sure how that happens.

Glad to read you are safely at your first destination. Have a good night!
ReplyDeleteThanks Patsy. Hopefully you and Bill are on your way as well.

Lots of miles and I'm glad you have nice weather and made it to your destination. Safe travels today.
ReplyDeleteThanks Doug. I know they aren't the miles you put in on your homeward journey but they were good for us.

That's a few miles under your belt ... hope the weather holds out and it's smooth sailing. I do love that drive.
ReplyDeleteThanks Nancy. I do love the drive, it's comfortable and I like the long stretches that allow one to actually look around a bit. Another day tomorrow like this one today and we will be just shy of half way to the Ontario border.

Safe Travels! That sign as you enter Texas that says Beaumont Tx is only another 854 miles is a bit intimidating! Hope the igloo keeps following you all the way to the island!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ivan. I figure we have about approx 900 - 1000 miles to get across Texas the way we are heading. We have a good start. The Igloo seems to like following the Dogsled and rolls along over humps, bumps and holes. Safe travels to you and Miss Hailey as well.

On our first trip east when we crossed into Texas we stopped at the first rest area. I was really impressed. They do things right in Texas. Thank you for blogging so we can keep track of you...lol.
ReplyDeleteTexas has some beautiful rest areas. I thought blogging on the road would be wise.

Pretty pictures :-) Safe travels!
ReplyDeleteThanks. Happy you folks arrived home safe and sound.

Nice progress. I bet that now that you are one your way home, you are anxious to get there!
ReplyDeleteWe are but won’t actually get to our summer spot for a few weeks after we get back to Ontario. We arrive in Ontario mid April but don’t arrive on the Rock until the first day or so in May. Too cold and by then the road is clear up the hill, we visit family in Southern Ontario until then.
