Our Location: Near American Girl Mine Road, BLM, CA
A nice night, a bit on the cool side but nice. The wind started picking up a bit this morning but calmed down quickly. Rain light, then a bit heavier and then it dribbled and drabbled before stopping. The sun came out and I'm certain the sunset will be one to photograph. The wash beside us ran a couple of inches deep for maybe 20 minutes and then it was gone. Interesting to see how quickly the desert soaks up the moisture.
The last bunch of photos from my ride with Jerry will grace the page tonight.
Yep, we did.
Picacho Peak over there.
White dots are bugs on the window.
They are deceiving, they are much steeper and the valleys between much deeper than they look.
The desert floor is anything but flat.
The hills were an odd colour of green, a hue of the rock.
If you look off toward the middle left you will see a number of 'shiny' looking objects. That would be the Jeep tour from Oregon siting at the historical marker having a break.
This fence rings the Picacho Gold Mine.
I left the jeep in this photo to give you an idea of the vastness of the area. This is the lead jeep in the group from Oregon.
We drove a winding, twisting route down here in the wash among all these rough looking rocks/sand walls.
Not wide here for me to be standing out taking photos. We came this way and will have to turn around and take this route to get back out again.
We are heading toward the lookout. Two photos down you can see where we left the jeep to take a wee hike. We left it just on the flat open space thru this cut.
We took a little hike. As you can see we left Miss Elva's Jeep way, way up there.
A couple of palm trees around the water of the boat ramp.
A fire tore through here some years ago as you can see by the blackened tree at in middle bottom of this photo.
Excuse the dots, bugs on the window.
There are 4 burros here, two tan, and two black.
Teddy bear cactus here, but there are none where we are located. Lots of volcanic rock here.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed the last of the photos.
Until next time.. take care, be safe,

A little late but Merry Christmas you two!! So glad you made it to the Valley of Names. Keep taking those pictures.
ReplyDeleteBetter late than never. haha. Jerry and I just touched the edge but I think Riley and I will go and have a look, if not this year, next year for sure. Glad you like the pictures.

I know I am repeating myself but the pictures are beautiful. Really looks like a fun ride.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like the photos. I'm sure Jerry would be able to explain the route.

Can you just imagine people coming here on horseback and by wagon to hunt for gold? Love seeing the burros!!
ReplyDeleteHaha. I've mentioned that many times over the years of coming out here. Jerry and I even briefly touched on it as well. I cannot imagine when I see the landscape how that would be possible. Humans and animals are amazingly determined.

I checked with my cousin. From what were told, my paternal grandmother and her siblings were born in the Picacho Mine area.
ReplyDeleteWow, you have some pretty close ties to the gold. Did they share any? Haha.

Good to see more pictures of your drive in the desert. Finally found the road you and Jerry took in Desert.com. I have it saved for next week when I get my new camera. You two are welcome to come along as a guide.
ReplyDeleteThanks Doug. I was going to say that if you take the road from Winterhaven to Picacho State Park you would see some of what we traveled. I'm not sure of my plans for next week but if I'm around I'd be happy to come along. I can't speak for Jerry of course but if you like I could contact him and ask.
