Long travel day......

Our Location: near Fort Stockton, Texas

A quick post, we're tired and hungry and dinner is cooking while I type. We left this morning before 8 AM and our goal was Sonora, Texas but at some point we decided we wanted to go farther and turned the Big Dog's nose west on I-10 and let him run. He stopped twice to drink today, this morning before leaving and then again just before lunch time at Menard, TX. He's due for another sip soon, he's resting about the 1/2 full mark.

Heading out this morning from Bellmead along Hwy 84.

Some nice colour and views along our travels today.

Gatesville water tower. A much larger town than I anticipated.
Sunny, warm, and fairly breezy but an interesting view out the windows. Rolling hills, a bit of the long, flat vistas as well but nothing mundane in colour for too long. We enjoyed State Highway 190 for most of the trip until shortly after 1 pm when we dropped down on to I-10. We had planned on making the rest area about 25 miles past Fort Stockton but found this cute little spot and so we shut down here for the night.

One of the many little towns, cities we past through today.

Definitely not very busy, is it?

Sure is pretty.

Talked to dad when we arrived. They too are getting a bit of sun and nice weather. Nothing as balmy as we are but still nice for them.

Lovely sign in Goldthwaite.

One of the little picnic areas that dot the landscape across Texas.

A huge armadillo. (not real of course)

Daughter Bradey sent a text today while we were driving through Brady, TX. How funny is that?

On that note I'm going to sign off and have some food. Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoy the photos.

Most of our roads today were pretty empty.

Prickly pear is growing everywhere.

Love the rock cuts here.

Pretty isn't it?

Until next time.... take care, be safe,

  1. Glad to see your great details and pictures of the route you're taking. I am meeting friends in Tyler, Texas and had planned to take I-20 westward. Instead, I think I will follow your route along Tx 190. Enjoy the journey ahead.

    1. Glad we could help Doug. We took TX 31 in the Tyler area. Latched onto I-35 South just at Bellmead/Waco. From the Walmart there we took Hwy 84 to US 190, going through Gatesville, Brady, Menard and finally Eldorado where we got off on to Hwy 277 to drop directly down (21 miles) to Sonora where we caught I-10. Great drive, some nice places to stop and a few cute things to see. The views were rolling hills and a bit of flat land but interesting. Enjoy!!

  2. I've never looked at a map of Texas before. There sure are a lot of highways to take. It looks like you picked a good one. Nice scenery. I've heard it feels like you drive forever before you get across Texas.

    1. Texas is a huge state and we've not really ever travelled far into it but this year for a few reasons we changed that. I think in the future we will travel this route to keep us out of the cold and will eventually find places we like to stop, it just didn't work this year. I will agree, Texas is a lot of driving to get across, but different parts of Texas have different scenery and it keeps things interesting. We didn't run across any stock yards this year, and therefore the air was pleasant!

  3. Looks like you are making great time, we love the landscape of Texas although there are some flat and desolate areas on that west side as well.

    1. We are travelling much faster than we usually do but we both think it is a good idea. We've never journeyed this far into the interior of Texas and are enjoying the views for sure. Much nicer than the flatter lands near Amarillo.

  4. Long days sometimes work out and get us further across that expansive state. We were anxious to reach New Mexico but still saw lots of scenery in Texas. Enjoy the journey!

    1. I agree longer days get us all closer to our destination but we hadn't planned on this many or this far, however we are both in agreement and will take longer on our next pass through this area.

  5. You really are piling on the miles. We do that when we just want to get somewhere and sit for a while.
